Link between high cholesterol and heart disease 'inconsistent', new study finds (“Statins inconclusive on myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and all-cause mortality”)
Medical Xpress / JAMA Internal Medicine ^ | Mar. 14, 2021 | Dr. Paula Byrne et al

New research from RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences has revealed that the link between 'bad' cholesterol (LDL-C) and poor health outcomes, such as heart attack and stroke, may not be as strong as previously thought.

Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the research questions the efficacy of statins when prescribed with the aim of lowering LDL-C and therefore reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Previous research has suggested that using statins to lower LDL-C positively affects health outcomes, and this is reflected in the various iterations of expert guidelines for the prevention of CVD. Statins are now commonly prescribed by doctors, with one third of Irish adults over the age of 50 taking statins, according to previous research.

The new findings contradict this theory, finding that this relationship was not as strong as previously thought. Instead, the research demonstrates that lowering LDL-C using statins had an inconsistent and inconclusive impact on CVD outcomes such as myocardial infarction (MI), stoke, and all-cause mortality.

In addition, it indicates that the overall benefit of taking statins may be small and will vary depending on an individual's personal risk factors.

The lead author on the paper is Dr. Paula Byrne from the HRB Centre for Primary Care Research based in RCSI's Department of General Practice. Commenting on the findings, Dr. Byrne says that "the message has long been that lowering your cholesterol will reduce your risk of heart disease, and that statins help to achieve this. However, our research indicates that, in reality, the benefits of taking statins are varied and can be quite modest."

The researchers go on to suggest that this updated information should be communicated to patients through informed clinical decision-making and updated clinical guidelines and policy.

Statins are as big a scam as COVID vaccines.

And cholesterol tests are easily gamed.

I’m on low dose BP med and low dose statin. Don’t tell my doc but I cut the pills in half. To me it’s a compromise of keeping both BP and cholesterol in reasonable check level without going overboard with meds especially the statin. I’m not overweight or indulged in any bad health habits but I do like my butter, cheese and eggs.

How does one game a blood test?

I had forgotten to fast and had eaten eggs a few hours before the blood test in Dec, and had to return for another blood test today, three months later.

I asked the Dr about the effect of the eggs on the first test, and he said it takes time for cholesterol levels to change.

Having eggs a few hours before or no eggs a few hours before wouldn’t have made a difference.

Cholesterol is the mother of all hormones. Without it, you die. A doctor I trust says the problem is really cholesterol that gets damaged by inflammation. The damaged cholesterol then becomes plaque in the arteries.

My cholesterol has always been around 250. Doc wants me on statins. Nope. 71yo. Had an MRI on arteries about five years ago. Had mild narrowing in one artery…that’s all.

Well, surprise, surprise! LDL is not the be all and end all of heart attacks and statins aren’t a miracle cure. I hate statins and won’t take them yet Big Medicine pushes them like candy, then laughs all the way to the bank. Greedy evil SOBs.

Dr. Steffanie Seneff

“I hate Statin drugs. I absolutely hate them. There is so much evidence they cause so many problems and they certainly don’t... it’s not a fair trade off. You would never win, in my opinion under almost any circumstances with a statin drug given all the damage it is going to cause compared to the slight chance you are going to avoid a heart attack.”

Your statement is wildly inaccurate. You are parroting the official lies of Big Medicine. Actual rates of side effects are quite high. My own cardiologist told me he could not get out of a chair due muscle weakness on Lipitor. He had to change to Crestor. Yes, that is just one anecdote and doesn’t speak to your 5% claim but the point is, side effects of statins are COMMON.

I sure wish I knew this 30 years ago. Yes, I learned it a few years back but that is after a lifetime of bad habits. Meanwhile, the food pyramid still says to pound the carbohydrates. What lying weasels.

The “Food Pyramid” and all of its high-carb/low-fat derivatives are a Crime Against Humanity.

“Your statement is wildly inaccurate.”

You’re misreading it. Virtually everyone who takes statins has side effects (caused me cataracts, caused a close friend diabetes...both effects were recently acknowledged, by they way). My point is just how out of control our drug industry is, when they can flat-out lie about drugs and not be stopped, since the only people who can stop them will be on their payroll.
