Bottles, cans, batteries: octopuses found using litter on seabed
The Guardian ^ | Linda Geddes

Whether it’s mimicking venomous creatures, or shooting jets of water at aquarium light switches to turn them off, octopuses are nothing if not resourceful. Now, an analysis of underwater images suggests octopuses are increasingly using discarded bottles, cans, and other human rubbish as shelter or as a sanctuary for their eggs.

The study – the first to systematically evaluate and characterise litter use by octopuses using crowdsourced images – analysed hundreds of underwater photos posted on social media platforms and image databases, or collected by marine biologists and diving interest groups.

The research, published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, documented 24 species of octopus sheltering inside glass bottles, cans, and even an old battery; burying themselves under a mixture of bottle tops and seashells; even carrying plastic items around while “stilt-walking” on two tentacles, to conceal themselves from predators.

Life adapts.
Soon enough certain garbage will be deemed necessary for wildlife.

Like with creating artificial reefs to help ocean habitats from deep-sixing old ships, our litter becomes another helpful thing to some creatures.

I can’t imaging carrying a bottle around as my portable home.

Take it apart, lickety-split.

Maybe even re-assemble it.

Octopuses are distrubingly clever.

Been around for something like 325,000,000 years, so they may have learned a thing or two.

Perfectly salvageable hulks are sent to the Briny Deep to be barrier reefs, fish habitats, and diving parks.

“Octopuses are distrubingly clever.“

Yep! Operating a light switch as described puts them well into that category…

Most of the plastic ocean pollution stems from Asia and Africa. I suppose now the UN will decree it is up to the USA to clean it up.

Nature is resourceful.

These tyrannical jackasses who worship the Earth while thinking it’s terribly fragile are just idiots.

But mostly, it’s all about being a Watermelon. “Green” religion on the outside, red on the in.

Look at how all these decades we can’t disturb shipwrecks - indeed, must sink ships in the deep - because it’s become an ecosystem that the critters and plants like.

That alone tells me lots about the nonsense about how terrible it is to “pollute”.

Not only octopi, but all small creatures make their homes in human refuse. Watch any video of the Lembeh straits. This richest environment in the world is dependent upon such trash for its very existence.
