WASHINGTON, Tuesday, March 11.
The rebels have evacuated Manassas. We occupied it this morning.
Dispatches received at headquarters this forenoon stated positively that the rebels had not evacuated Winchester. If this is so, -- and those best authorized to know report it, -- Gen. JACKSON's rebel army is assuredly cut off and will be captured.
This abandonment of a splendid army corps at Winchester could not have been designed, and is further proof of the haste and confusion of the flight from Centreville and Manassas.
The officer commanding the Union forces at Manassas sent in a messenger to-night. I had the fortune to meet him, and get many particulars concerning the condition of things at Manassas. That famed rebel post was occupied this morning about 10 o'clock, and the Union flag was unfurled over the works.
Everything at Manassas was found in great confusion, the flight of the rebels having been precipitate in the extreme. Persons in the vicinity allege that the abandonment of the place was quite recently resolved on, and the guns were begun to be removed about a week ago. Intense alarm seized the rebel forces, and thenceforward a wild haste characterized all their movements.
The last rebel troops left the place last Friday. their works were left entire and unharmed, and finer, it is said, are not to be found in the country. The log-huts are remarkably comfortable, and the accommodations ample for one hundred and fifty thousand men. Our army have come into possession of commissary and hospital stores in large quantities, besides wagons, tents, caissons and hundreds of other valuables. It is proper to add, however, that statements quite contradictory of these are received, and it is hard to decide which are true.
