Conservativeimage, I like your philosophy about prepping for survival in the woods. That’s most likely what would happen in the long run. Though I live already in a remote forestry mountain area, we still are close to tiny towns for a lot of practical reasons. But in a SHTF situation I figure that this will all be taken from us either by raiders or petty self-proclaimed “overlords”. We are okay with surviving in the woods, we know first hand how to build a log house (we even backpacked for our honeymoon 52 years ago), but I just can’t yet figure out how we would survive heavy winters, at our age…. Who knows.

We’re in a similar situation. Nearest big town is 10 miles away, though there is a smaller town in the other other direction - but they’ll just raid Amy & John’s Mom-n-Pop market before they get to us in a few weeks time. ;)
That said, it’s always important to save a bullet for yourself.
For all of my skills and such, I’m not sure I’d WANT to live in a time when it is, ‘apocalyptic out there.’ Especially in winter! I don’t much relish being, ‘Last Woman Standing.’ :(
Watch the animals. Let them teach you. Most of them do migrate for the seasons. Some do other things. It's also time for me to be considering age. Maybe the best thing for that would be a younger partner/pupil with moral character.
