OBION COUNTY, TN — Two people died after they were attacked by a camel at a petting zoo in Obion, Tennessee, investigators confirmed Friday.

The Obion County Sheriff's Office says it received a call about a camel was on the loose and attacking people near Shirley Farms on South Bluff Road in Obion, Tennessee, around 4:44 p.m. Thursday. The Jackson Sun reports that the camel was a featured animal at the Shirley Farms petting zoo.

My sympathies for the families of those killed.
Probably the last time there will be any camels present at that zoo from now on. Their liability insurance is likely to grow exponentially. All it takes is one incident like this. Today, there were two of them. Zookeepers better lawyer up.

Run with someone slower. And consider a serpentine route.

Best to stick with Llamas or better yet, Horses as the most ‘exotic’ animal at that kind of zoo.

Rocky Mountain Elk are tiny, except for their antlers. You should see the Roosevelts.

Given the history of this place, they are gonna be financial toast, and likely shut down by State of MO authorities anyway.

My wife and middle daughter went to a wildlife wolf rescue place in the Rockies outside Denver. They were petting the wolves. Yikes! I wasn’t there.

Same middle daughter got peed on by the monkeys at Gibraltar.

Oldest daughter got spit on by a llama at a zoo.

I’ve had mama deer stomping their front feet at me when I was 20 yards from their fawns. I stomped my foot right back at her and she took off with the kids.

My wife came across a mountain lion on a trail in the SF Bay Area. She backed away and the cat went the other way.

I’ve had moose go by pretty darn close to me. They are the orneriest and most unpredictable beasts.

We’ve all lived to see another day, thank God.

Ah, yes. Fernando’s Ilamas!
Not to be confused with ‘Mr. Corinthinan Leather’ from Fantasy Island.

I know someone that spent a week in the hospital fighting a rare infection from a rabbit bite. They made it though so I guess its still safer than camel wrestling.

Got charged by a mama moose, didn’t see her and the little one in the willows until it was too late. Ground was bouncing under my feet. She covered about 50 feet while I covered 5, peeled off and went back to newborn. I got across the river and away.

I see that out here with elk. One charge and they’re trampled and gored but they get close anyway.

“Given the history of this place, they are gonna be financial toast, and likely shut down by State of MO authorities anyway.”

The state has liability here for not shutting down the place after the first couple of inspections. Animal cruelty appplies here as well. I’m not a PETA, but the animals were suffering here.

Maybe it was for camel rides, we still have those near here.
There isnt any enclosure but there are staff controlling leads and posts to secure them to when necessary. There used to be a lot more but we still have a couple elephant rides that Im aware of.

Some kind of sloppy negligent supervision of the animal seems likely. There was an elephant that worked at a farmers market when I was a kid. She was well behaved, I cant remember any adults leading her around the property after she started her walk. She would start at her empty trough and when she got back she was payed in split cabbages and bruised apples and things like that and we would climb off.
Imagine something like that happening today.

Since camels arent for petting (walk into enclosure and rub it), it almost must have been for riding and not secured properly.

Wife is driving in ,
I am sitting in passenger seat.
We stop at a stop sign, i look and there is a sign, Estes Park Library.
A most beautiful statue in the front yard, a giant Elk.
I tell my wife, Wow, what a magnificent statue.
The Elk turned its massive head and rack toward me and blinked.
12 feet away from my side of our Subaru Outback.
Still, Chama New Mexico.
You can view Hundreds of elk at dusk.

Rocky Mountain Elk are tiny, except for their antlers. You should see the Roosevelts.

Tule elk are tiny for elk but huge compared to deer. Roosevelt elk are bigger than Rocky Mountain elk but Rocky Mountain elk are hardly tiny. In proportion to their body size, Tule elk antlers are far larger than those other two elk species.

Oh, um, ya...

My intended point was that maybe “We’ve always done it this way,” finally got out of hand.
