Ok fellow Freepers. Drag out the junk box and dust of the Key and Dipole. I believe this is about to get nasty and communications in a cyberattack will be target one.

If you *NEED* to communicate by HAM, then the license requirement is kinda moot. Doubt the enforcers would be looking.

I got it in 2012. I don't think they asked for email addresses back then, and they discontinued regular mail communications.
I just checked the ULS. They have a 2 year grace period to renew. I'll have to call them because I can't remember my ULS password.

In my experience with ham people, they don’t care about real emergencies - they’ll just jump in and help.
But they get REALLY pissed about unlicensed people messing around and abusing things.

You don’t need code anymore to get a ham license.

The only thing stopping me from taking the test, is that your information becomes public.
I have a portable HAM.. just can’t transmit on it.

I made a mistake just to let you know, the model radio I have is a Yaesu 857D, not the 817 just in case you were looking online for information.

What do you mean ‘dust it off’? Some of us use our licenses every day...

For local communications, yes. Especially if the repeater stations are still functional. For worldwide communications? NO. Completely useless.

Lived in an HOA for 5 years. Had an HF antenna almost the whole time. An insulated-wire dipole along the peak of the roof, with the coax coming in through the roof vent. Worked many foreign countries with it. Neighbors never knew. I told them when I was moving out. They were surprised.

I forget my .Morse code, but that looks like SoS.-.-. = C. --.- = Q. CQ is shorthand for calling for any listener.

Since the internet really started taking off the number of global stations that have gone off the air is enormous.
In fact this year is the last year they publish the WRTH.
I have a small digital shortwave radio which is almost useless because there aren’t many stations broadcasting. I can go up the ham bands and listen to call signs and, I usually copy CW.

When you're ready, hamstudy.org has a ton of practice tests and questions. Good advice. I crammed for 2 weeks using them. Only missed 2 questions on my Extra.

In fact this year is the last year they publish the WRTH. That's truly the end of an era. I remember anxiously awaiting for the latest Popular Electronics, because they would have the updated Frequency lists for the Shortwave Stations.
