Any list without 1984 and Animal Farm on it is a very poor and incomplete list.

I agree. Although this guy’s list isn’t too bad, it strikes me mostly as a list of “books I liked” rather than “books you should know, in order to navigate the future”.

For that purpose, Orwell is far superior to Melville.
