Chevy Dealers Gearing Up To Beat Tesla With Electric Trucks & SUVs. The chairman of the Chevrolet National Dealer Council backs GM's plan to meet demand and surpass Tesla on EVs.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Trail Boss

General Motors has been touting its future EV efforts for years, and more recently, CEO Mary Barra has talked about the automaker's plans to overtake Tesla as the US EV leader. While GM doesn't have a whole lot to show related to those plans quite yet, it has announced major efforts that are already underway, which will boost its EV output significantly in the coming years.

That said, it doesn't matter how many EVs GM – or any company for that matter – can produce unless it can actually sell them. In order for the automaker to sell plenty of electric cars, it will have to make sure its dealers are on board, or switch to some form of online sales or direct sales model. It seems Chevy dealers are ready to roll. According to Automotive News, dealer chairman of the Chevrolet National Dealer Council Keith McCluskey shared:

"We want to beat Tesla on EVs. We want to meet demand."

McCluskey is also encouraging GM to stick to its plans, producing enough electric vehicles for dealers to sell and meet that demand. Dealers can't be successful in selling EVs, and GM can't beat Tesla if it doesn't manufacture enough electric cars. The dealer chairman said:

"It's nice to have the backing of General Motors and knowing that they're making those types of investments to create that kind of volume. There's a lot of us dealers out there. And if we're going to maximize our success, we need them to build enough product that we can be No. 1. You can't be No. 1 if you don't produce enough."

As many folks in the EV community have pointed out, the whole "beat" concept really doesn't matter at this point. It's not about "beating" one another, but just about companies actually producing EVs to the best of their abilities. We can talk about competing with and beating one another once new models come to market, EV production is up to speed, and people are taking delivery in large numbers.

GM is banking on the long list of pre-orders for its upcoming electric vehicles, such as the Silverado EV. GM says over 100,000 people have already placed a reservation for the upcoming electric pickup truck that's expected to go on sale as a 2024 model sometime in 2023.

Chevrolet is also seeing plenty of interest in its future Blazer and Equinox electric crossovers. The automaker is also putting an emphasis on producing affordable EVs that will be accessible to all consumers, not just the wealthy.

GM's current goal is to offer 30 new electric vehicles across the globe by 2025. The company says it will produce as many as 600,000 electric trucks per year at two locations in Michigan. In addition, it's working on transitioning its Orion Assembly plant into a battery factory.

McCluskey went on to say that he believes the sale of 600,000 electric pickup trucks per year is realistic. He also added that the addition of more affordable, high-volume electric SUVs, such as the Chevy Equinox EV, will be integral to GM's plans to succeed in the segment.

I’ll never in my life buy a vehicle from Obozo’s Government Motors. I do mean never.

It seems Chevy dealers are ready to roll.

Yeah, but, are the customers ready to roll?

"We want to beat Tesla on EVs. We want to meet demand."

It shouldn't be hard to beat Tesla since, the EV market is still very small in comparison to the total vehicle market.

Meeting the demand is a different story, and the demand will have to be created by the automakers and the dealers. Car makers and dealers are betting on the old saying of "if we build it, they will come".

The co-conspirator in the EV market creation idea, is the U.S. government, which is trying to kill the oil industry, thereby killing the ICE vehicle market, while hoping that people will be stuck buying electric vehicles only. That's not the way of the free-market system.

The law of supply and demand is not exactly applicable in the EV market.

Are EVs the “New Coke” of the 21st century?
Stay tuned.

Actually, I think they want you to not be able to buy any cars.

US energy production would fight inflation. They WANT the inflation they have created to kill the American economy.

Tesla has a much more powerful brand in the EV market.

I have nothing against Tesla, but, like any other market leader, they can be overcome with equal or better products at lower prices and great service. It's happened in every industry in the past, where the market leadership has been overcome or been made irrelevant.

I’m not against EV’s, but I keep thinking that there’s going to be some unintended consequences as the manufacturers make the switch from gas engines. Market acceptance is going to have a ceiling, though we don’t really know what that is yet. Tesla is still very much a niche item, so it’s growth is much more organic than the plans GM and Ford are pushing.

There is a long list of reasons GM will never beat Tesla at anything, one of them being the UAW.
Plus Tesla doesn’t spend even a penny on advertising.

Of coarse it’s magic. All you have to do is plug into the wall and it’s there, just like food comes from grocery stores and meat comes prepackaged in cellophane. DUH!

Still not telling us how they plan to power the charging stations. Where will the electricity come from?

Their plan is to make gas as painful as possible to buy and push people to battery operated cars.

You can tell xiden's puppets thought this one through. Jack up the prices, not just of fuel, but of everything - food, clothing, electricity, medicine, housing - so that people have little or no money for left over for anything. This way they'll plunk down money on a new EV. Oops!

How many cars on the road today? How much gas do they consume?

Now switch them all to electric. How much electricity will they need to draw form the grid to charge them to replace the gas consumed above?

And the grid will still need to power everything else that it’s powering today. Gonna need to supersize that grid.

“Honey, did you charge the Chevy?”

“No, it is still in the garage, and we don’t have space to park a save distance 10 feet from the house per the insurance company.”

“Well, you better get out there and charge it, because they may have to shut the grid down tonight, and we may need the car to run the house.”

“Then how will we get to work?”

“Bus”
