"Free thought" is a philosophical viewpoint which holds that positions regarding truth should be formed on the basis of logic, reason, and empiricism, rather than authority, tradition, revelation, or dogma.
When you are awake, you are able to clearly see.

Looks like darker circles around the eye sockets, and rest of face is lighter, like she used too much pancake makeup.
Or a mask !
The ones used in the “Mission Impossible” movies come to mind.
She has exhibited this condition for some time, albeit it is not always this apparent. I noticed an almost skeletal look to her face some years back and have since marveled at how her people (usually) manage to change her appearance for the better.
