He is also the producer, which means that he is responsible for EVERYBODY’s negligence. He hired EVERYbody, including the gun handlers.
If a car fails and someone gets hurt in an accident because a drunk assembly line worker installed a part incorrectly, you bet the victim gets to sue the car company.

He did not check the gun. He cocked the gun. He fired the gun. He is the responsible party.You left out that he was the producer and "star". Apparently workplace safety meant nothing if he could save a few bucks and make the movie on the cheap.
