I’ve seen recent articles from American academics that claimed the A-bomb didn’t end the war, but the intervention of the USSR that led to Japan’s surrender.

Yes. The Soviet encyclopedia I read in the 70s said exactly that. There was hardly mention on the nukes on Japan. It claimed Russia brought Japan to heel. It read like current NK propaganda.

The declaration of war by Russia on Japan certainly entered into the deliberations of surrender talks. The Japanese did not want to surrender any territory to the Russians. Still, the BOMB had to be the primary consideration once its power was fully understood.
