Putin fires fresh salvo on Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, this time singling out Poland
Deutsche Welle ^ | Dec 2019

Russia's Vladimir Putin has criticized a recent European resolution assigning some blame to the Soviet Union in the outbreak of World War II.

Putin told soldiers that Allied policies of appeasement before the war broke out, for instance tolerating Germany's annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1938, were also to blame for the conflict and for the communist Soviet Union's decision to seek a deal with fascist Germany.

But he reserved particular criticism for Poland, alleging in particular that Poland's ambassador to Germany at the time was a Nazi sympathizer. "Essentially they colluded with Hitler. This is clear from documents, archival documents," Putin said…citing what he claimed were excerpts from the diary of Poland's ambassador, that the diplomat had promised to erect a statue in Hitler's honor to thank Germany for removing Jews from the country.

"A bastard, an anti-Semitic pig, you cannot put it any other way," Putin said.

This follows Poland expressing "concern and disbelief" over the weekend at similar comments from Putin on the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.

The topic is immensely sensitive in Russia and Poland alike. Russia often feels its contributions in World War II, accounting for well over half of Germany's military losses at a cost of almost 30 million Soviet lives, are underplayed or marginalized by other Allied powers. Putin said on Tuesday that the European Parliament's resolution was trying to eradicate the memory of the Soviet contribution to Allied victory.

"It is people like these who negotiated with Hitler — it is people like that who today are tearing down monuments to the liberating warriors, the Red Army soldiers who freed Europe and the European people from the Nazis…”

Poland, meanwhile, sees itself as betrayed on almost all sides at both the start and then the end of the war…

I have no flippin' idea who Q is and I don't believe anyone else has either. I'm only familiar with the uh, following.

I probably shouldn'ta mentioned it; that stuff is supposed to stay segregated in its own threads.

If he attacks Poland, NATO will be forced to play its hand and defend a fellow member. Be looking for Sweden, Finland,Moldolvo, and Austria to join NATO.

The big problem now is it’s quite clear that Putin has the belief that the Soviet Union was “Stabbed In the Back”, just as Hitler ranted that Germany was “Stabbed in the Back” at the end of WWI.

The Russian movies about WWII, included scenes that the British and Americans were working with the Nazis behind the scenes to undercut the Soviet Union.

Yes. The Soviet encyclopedia I read in the 70s said exactly that. There was hardly mention on the nukes on Japan. It claimed Russia brought Japan to heel. It read like current NK propaganda.

"Putin is actually right about that. Stalin saw the Western allies give in to Hitler time after time, and thought if he didn’t strike a deal with Germany he’d be next."

Agreed there. But it's ridiculous for Putin to talk like Russia is innocent of WW2 Axis atrocities in Poland when Russia was invading Poland from the east 16 days after Germany started invading Poland from the west. Then Germany and Russia agreed on how they'd divide Poland.

Or are we all supposed to forget that part of history. Or that Russia invaded Finland a couple of months later.

Putin talking like Russia was a sweet little angel during Nazi atrocities would be like Chris Christie saying he's skinny while also calling Stacy Abrams fat.

When I was stationed at Ramstein in Germany, many Pole airmen came through for training. These guys are serious hombres.

Imagine the character Gene Hackman played in the movie “A Bridge too Far”.

And they absolutely hate the Russians.

I could see a Russian move on Poland be a total disaster for Russia.

Stalin knew the Pact meant War in the West. His hope was that the French, German and British armies would slug it out like in WWI, which would allow the Soviets to swoop right in.

Only, Stalin didn’t count on France falling so easily.

I’m not sure what a resolution from the European Parliament, on a diplomatic event in 1939 is going to accomplish?

But I’m sure is has a rational explanation.(Sarcasm)

Agreed. Stalin had good reason to strike a bargain with Hitler. It could be fairly argued that British and French stupidity pushed him in that direction.

But the instant Soviet troops crossed into the Baltic states and Poland Stalin became as bad as Hitler.

And don’t forget what the USSR did to Warsaw at the end of WWII. It let the Germans slaughter the Polish resistance so that the Soviets could install a puppet communist government in Poland.

Some of the most massive battles of WWII were fought on the Russian front. Battles most people in the West never heard of, like the battle of Kursk.
