Jefferson County Homeowner Shot At While Stopping 2 Suspects From Stealing Catalytic Converter

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) — Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of an attempted theft that involved shots fired at a home Friday morning.
According to Jeffco Sheriff, around 6:15 a.m. a homeowner in the 8300 block of S Allison Street confronted two suspects who were attempting to steal a catalytic converter on their property. The homeowner intervened, and a physical altercation took place, where the homeowner likely grabbed one of the suspects, and the second one pulled a gun and fired a single shot that missed.
After the encounter, both suspects got away in a silver 4-door Honda. They are described as white males, who are both 6-feet tall. One was described to have red hair, the other brown hair. They were wearing dark clothing.
The suspects were seen heading eastbound on W Chatfield Avenue in the suspect vehicle.
This is becoming a popular crime around here. And they are brash about it.
A person in our neighborhood was eating at a steak restaurant and had their two catalytic converters stolen from their SUV while in the parking lot.

When selling catalytic converters, the seller must present the current registration of the car and VIN number, and provide a current driver’s license or ID.
Happened to me last year. Honda Element. Lots of ground clearance, no need for a jack. I know of three Elements they hit in this area.
Same with idiots stealing air conditioner coils.
Yeah. Legally.
In my area I have to show ID when recycling soda cans.

6:15 am is pretty early for most thieves. But I agree.

Something tells me there are ways around that.

Funny but you almost never see suspects described as black but I gusess that would be racist.
They make protective guards you can have installed for that; I’m not sure how much they slow the thieves down, though.
Well when someone shows up with a dozen converters you’d think some questions might pop up, just saying.
My question is what/where is the black market for these stolen converters?
I don’t know, but it’s happening a lot in my county.

If the requirement worked, the converters wouldn’t be getting stolen right and left. Obviously, there is a work-around.
