Distressing video captures road-rage shooting that killed father of two

Chilling dashcam video captured the moment a father of two was fatally shot in Chicago during a road-rage incident with another driver — who was later arrested on a murder charge.

Scott Mattison, 46, is seen arguing with the driver of a white Ford sedan about 5:30 p.m. Sunday near Bartlett and Oltendorf roads in the northwestern suburb of Streamwood, CBS Chicago reported.

He appears to stick his arm into the vehicle before being shot.

“He didn’t deserve to die — to be gunned down the way he was,” Kevin Polka, Mattison’s boss at Paragon Mechanical Inc. in Arlington Heights, where the victim worked as an HVAC installer, told the news outlet.

“He always was about his daughters,” Polka added.

Spoken like a road-rager who can’t control themselves and blames others for their actions.

Just watched the video. He gets out of his vehicle, yells through the window, then reaches into the car, at which point he is shot. I would have shot him too.

Depending on state law, I see self defense. You have a guy accosting a man in a rage.

They charged this kid with murder. Seems overcharge. Also watch for blue state libs to realize the kid is a POC and come to his DEFENSE, a reversal of of their treatment of Rittenhouse/Zimmerman/etc just because the kid is hispanic.

He died doing what he loved the most - getting into pointless arguments with heavily armed strangers.

My vote, BTW, is for murder. He did not pose a lethal thread to the driver. You can’t shoot just because you feel threatened. You can only shoot if you’re life is at stake.

I’m getting ready for the “well, in Vietnam we would have called in an air strike and blah blah blah” response in my best Jeff Bridges voice.

You are correct.

And most do not realize that the stand your ground laws do not change the laws. All it really does is give you a level of protection in court if you have followed the law.

Reaching in the window is the same as reaching in your window at home or in your front door at home and is plainly an attempt to do you harm.

A friend of mine makes the sign of the cross, directed towards the other guy. At first that seems odd and unnecessary. But it focuses his mind on something else besides getting angry.

I forgot to mention that different prosecutors read the same laws and get a different interpretation. It pays to be familiar with how your local cops and prosecutors interpret the law.

Obviously Chicago and Cook county will not read the law and get the same conclusion a prosecutor in FL or Texas.

Show us the picture of the perp?

Blacked out window quick on a trigger.

Hmmm.

Could it be a Dem voter? Surprised the DA didn’t give the guy a medal for killing a whitey.

Also, don’t get out of your vehicle, go back to another car, yell and reach in the window/throw a punch.

Many lessons can be taken from this incident. What you said above should be one of them.

I have great sympathy for a citizen who has to make a split-second call. But if you shoot and a jury disagrees with that, you’re in for a world of hurt. But of course you’re also in a world of hurt you don’t shoot when you really should have.

A karate master of my acquaintance once said that the best defensive move of all was “not to be there”. In other words, take every opportunity to avoid when you can.

There must be more to the story if they’re charging the shooter with first degree murder.

Mostly that the State of Illinois does not want any claim of "self-defense" to stand. And they will aggressively prosecute a marginal incident to make sure that it doesn't.

I imagine that the driver spoke to the police when he should have clammed up and waited for his lawyer.

Reaching into a car looks like a potentially lethal threat to me. I would vote for an acquittal, based on the information disclosed so far. Yes, that opinion could change.

I have had an angry driver get out of his SUV, open my door, and reach to pull me from my driver seat. I did not shoot him. I was considering how to break his arm against the steering wheel when he backed off. Must have been the ugly face I was making.

I closed the door, locked it, and waited for the red light to change. Then I drove off. Saved me a lot of trouble.

Too bad this driver had a window open. I drive with doors auto-locked, and windows closed these days.

"He didn't deserve to die".

thats a personal opinion..reality is another thing.

On the street among strangers, you are playing russian roulette- in the dark! The world is full of people who will kill you for the slightest implied or not implied transgression. Deserving or not, deal with strangers rudely at your own risk

.

Did he deserve to die? No more or less than someone hitting a powerball jackpot deserved it. But they played the game and won.

he played the wrong game and won the prize the other guy was giving away..

Looked like he was definitely invading the shooter’s space. He could have grabbed the guy or went for the guy’s neck so that’s enough to shoot him. He appears stupid enough to go for the gun. Not too smart to get out of his car and confront someone but reaching inside the car is too far.

Well then you would get charged with murder just like this idiot. The guy withdrew his arm from the car and stepped back a foot or two. You don’t have any justification to shoot him then.

I live in an upscale suburban community that is a long way from any trouble. It is not really a big deal. I am just somewhat paranoid by inclination, training and experience. Stuff can happen anywhere over a long enough time frame.

A formerly long commute exposed me to a lot of bad behavior on the road, in which I managed to avoid participation (well, except for that one time).

Stop lights are where the "vortex of stupidity" seemed to concentrate most often. I especially recall the time when a man got of his pickup truck, opened the passenger side door of the car in the left turn lane, climbed in and started throwing punches at the driver.

It is really hard to connect a punch when one is lying across a passenger seat. They both got out and started a ridiculous slap flight - like a couple of high-school girls.

Of course, they were blocking both lanes of the road, and all of the commuter traffic behind them. No place to go, just watch the show.

They finally got back in their respective vehicles and drove away. No gunplay from either party. And the rest of us drove off to work. A good time had by all.

It's hard to tell from the video if the shots were after he withdrew his arm, or if he withdrew his arm because he was shot. The video was edited, so its impossible to tell if the audio/video sync is correct.

But yeah, you are correct. If he did withdraw his arm when he saw the firearm, then I would not have shot.

Judging solely by the interview with his friend/employer, I suspect that he was shot when his arm was still inside the car. "Scott made mistakes. He did. He wasn't perfect by any means."
