Fighting COVID-19 with milk? (Bovine lactoferrin “effective against all the strains”)

In a new report, scientists have collaborated to investigate the antiviral properties of cow milk protein against variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the illness.

The protein in question is lactoferrin, found in the milk of most mammals. Bovine lactoferrin, from cow milk, has bioactive characteristics against many microbes, viruses, and other pathogens and has been found to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection under experimental conditions by blocking the ability of the virus to enter target cells, as well as by supporting cells' antiviral defense mechanisms.

"Bovine lactoferrin has shown antiviral activity in human clinical trials," says Jonathan Sexton, Ph.D. "For example, orally administered bovine lactoferrin has been shown to improve the severity of viral infections, including rotavirus and norovirus. Given the broad antiviral efficacy and safety, minimal side effects, and commercial availability of bovine lactoferrin, several review papers have suggested using it as a preventive or post-exposure treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection."

With the goal of improving clinical relevance and translatability, the team tested bovine lactoferrin against some of the most common SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern from around the world, including the WA1 variant representative of the United States outbreak in 2020, the B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and P.1 variants, and the Delta variant. Sexton explains, "Each of these variants includes modifications to the SARS-Cov-2 spike protein that reduce the efficacy of newly produced vaccines. Furthermore, each of these strains shows reduced neutralization by vaccination sera."

The researchers found that bovine lactoferrin was effective against all the strains that were tested in vitro, and they expect it would also have activity against additional emergent strains.

Sexton emphasizes, "An orally available therapeutic that covers emerging strains would be ideal for treating SARS-CoV-2 in areas without widespread vaccination or if new strains escape the vaccine."

How does lactoferrin help immune system?

The ability of lactoferrin to bind large quantities of iron also provides protection against pathogens and their metabolites by enhancing phagocytosis and cell adherence and controlling the release of proinflammatory cytokines.

So no one who drinks milk has gotten Covid?

C’mon man! You can do better than this milk theory.

What did rush used to say?

Everyone who has died has eaten peas. (something like that)

Yes, there are other studies.
- one meta analysis showed significant effects
- two studies were in vitro
- several had no significant effects
- others had promising results

It’s worth pursuing but doesn’t appear to be a silver bullet.

The concentration of lactoferrin changes from 2-5 mg/ml in colostrum to 0.1-0.3 mg/ml in mature bovine milk.

Thanks for posting this. \ Interesting that we have some first-hand accounts of effectiveness of Apolactoferrin.

I have 2 questions:

1. How much Apolactoferrin did you take daily and duration you took it?

2. Did you also take Benadryl combined with the Apolactoferrin? The combination was determined to be very effective according to a couple other studies posted here.

We took 250 mg/day of the Jarrow Formulas form (apolactoferrin).

The Benadryl study came out just after we first got COVID, so we didn’t have it on hand, but I did consider it.

That study is referenced here:

So that’s why the little kids aren’t getting it?

Good catch. I read the paper, all 29 pages (half that much due to the extensive footnotes) and what a steaming pile of 💩💩💩.
The author is a Berkeley alumni, so that says a lot right there!
ANYWAY, re the subject at hand-
I am lactose intolerant. I drink lactose free milk, what I want to know is, is lactoferrin present in lactose free milk, or has it been removed, and if so, by what process, pasteurization or from the introduction of the enzyme that neutralizes lactose? I’m sure I can look it up, it’ll just take me some time🤓
