IMPORTANT FROM TENNESSEE: The Enemy Reported to be Concentrating at Chattanooga; The Evacuation of Columbus Confirmed (3/2/1862)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 3/2/1861

WASHINGTON, Saturday, March 1.

News from Nashville, dated yesterday, has been received. The enemy is retreating toward the Tennessee River.

The outposts of our forces are ten miles on the Memphis Railroad. [Probably the Memphis and Ohio Railroad.]

By means of steamers which passed above the broken lock on the Green River, at Bowling Green, a means of transportation has been reestablish for our troops.

It is stated that the rebels have evacuated Columbus.

A body is said to be concentrating at Chattanooga, [in the Southern part of the State.]

A great change has already occurred in the political feeling of the people of Tennessee. The War Department has authorized the raising and arming of volunteer troops in that State. The indications are that a large force of loyal Tennesseeans will soon be under arms to aid the United States forces.

The policy of the Government is energetically directed toward supporting the loyal feeling in the Southwestern States, and placing them in the attitude of resistance to the rebel authority. Abundant evidence is afforded that a truly loyal feeling exists, which, although for some time overpowered and silenced, is now ready to avail itself of the presence of the United States forces for its manifestation in meeting the enemy in battle.

Correspondence of the Chicago Post.

CAIRO, Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1892.

The evacuation of Nashville by the rebel forces and its occupation by National troops is no longer a matter of conjecture. From Col. J.D. WEBSTER, who arrived here from Fort Donelson to-day, I learn that before he left Donelson couriers arrived there announcing the entrance of the advance of Gen. BUELL'S army into the capitol of Tennessee. The rebel army has departed, and about one-half the inhabitants had followed their example.
