Texas primary: Gov. Abbott, Beto O’Rourke to face off after wins

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott handily beat several vocal challengers during Tuesday’s primary, leading to a November face-off with Democrat Beto O’Rourke, who also cruised to victory.

The incumbent governor, who is seeking a third term, easily won his party’s nomination, fending off six other candidates, including Allen West, a former congressman and chairman of the Republican Party of Texas.

“Republicans sent a message,” Abbott said. “They want to keep Texas on the extraordinary path of opportunity that we have provided over the past eight years.”

O’Rourke - who made high-profile, though unsuccessful, runs for Senate in 2018 and president in 2020 - had been heavily favored to emerge from a five-person field.

He celebrated his win with a rally in Fort Worth, where in 2018 he flipped Texas’ largest red county.

“This group of people, and then some, are going to make me the first Democrat to be governor of the state of Texas since 1994,” he told supporters.

Abbott got 67% of the Republican primary vote - and with just that 67% alone, it appears he will get considerably more votes cast for him than all votes cast in the Democratic primary for every candidate running for governor - combined.

Where I voted there was a 30 minute wait for Republican voters, Democrats could walk right up and get their ballot.

I can certainly believe that with the numbers I am seeing in that link above in the difference in the raw votes cast.

Two hour wait for me. Never seen this type of turnout for a primary. The crowd was 95% Republican.

You would have to think that turnout is driven by MAGA voters.

It is going to be Abbott versus Beat Off O’Jerker.

Jeffrey One Hand Toobin is going to be Beat Off’s right hand man.

Wonder why Trump didn’t endorse Allen West?

My understanding is that some of Trump’s corrupt polops have made a side biz of selling his endorsements. And my sense is that Trump might at times be more focused on extending his winning endorsement record than who’s best for the job.

Obama endorses nine Texas candidates, leaves out Beto O’Rourke

On Monday, Former President Barack Obama issued a second round of midterm endorsements, including nine candidates running for office in Texas. But he’s not backing Beto.

The list of endorsements numbered 260 Democratic candidates and notably left out Rep. Beto O’Rourke, the El Paso Democrat challenging Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. A senior official working with Obama told Newsweek the former president endorsed candidates “who sought out his endorsement.”

While no official statement has been issued by either O’Rourke’s campaign or the Office of Barack Obama, an ex-spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee speculated an endorsement was not necessary for O’Rourke since he had developed his own “brand.”

“You see scenes of 50,000 people coming out for him in Texas, he has been to all 254 counties; he doesn’t need Barack Obama...I just don’t think it will necessarily help him,” the spokesperson told The Hill.

Obama’s Texas endorsements feature four candidates running for Congress, and five candidates running for the Texas Legislature.

“Today, I’m proud to endorse even more Democratic candidates who aren’t just running against something, but for something—to expand opportunity for all of us and to restore dignity, honor, and compassion to public service,” Obama said announcing the endorsements in a tweet.
