‘The Godfather’ Scores Top Weekend Box Office Average — 50 Years Later
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | FEBRUARY 28, 2022 | Pamela McClintock

The rerelease of Francis Ford Coppola's mob pic boasted the top location average of the Feb. 25-27 weekend.

Over the Feb. 25-27 weekend, Paramount booked The Godfather in 156 theaters across North America in honor of the movie’s 50th anniversary.

Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic Mafia pic earned $970,000 for a per-location average of $6,218, the best of any film for the weekend. (The next closest was Uncharted’s $5,438 average from 4,275 theaters and The Automat’s $5,004 from three locations.)

The Godfather 50 Years was No. 1 or No. 2 in 50 percent of the theaters where it played, and among the top three in all 156 locations. It came in first in AMC Lincoln Square, one of the country’s busiest cinemas, as well as AMC Metreon in San Francisco and AMC Georgetown in Washington, D.C.

“These results are extraordinary,” says Paramount domestic distribution president Chris Aronson. “Most people have seen The Godfather, but not in the theater.

Last week, Paramount threw a bash in Los Angeles in honor of The Godfather‘s anniversary.

“A couple of times, I thought I was finished,” Coppola told The Hollywood Reporter in regards to his fear of being fired during filming. He wasn’t, of course, and the movie adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel would go on to win three Oscars, including best picture, and become a cultural phenomenon.

The 50th anniversary rerelease also did well overseas, earning $1.4 million from a handful of markets.

The Godfather has grossed a total of $248.2 million at the global box office, not adjusted for inflation.

Godfather II seems appropriate, many parallels to current world events.

Amazing...a 50 year old film that was actually good still makes more money against it’s “woke” competitors.

Actually III is a pretty good film. It’s not as good as Part I, but still better than all of today’s offerings.

Nice find! That could be it. However it does not look like it was released for sale, simply shown on HBO in 2016. I thought I remembered parts of three in it but apparently, according to that write up it was only a compilation of parts one and two.

Coppola wanted the Godfather I & II to remain as he made them (and edited them). He agreed to versions for TV in the 80s that edited the GF I&II chronologically and there was extra footage inserted also. You can search for Godfather Epic or Godfather Saga. A few years back HBO broadcast the Godfather Saga in HD. Coppola hasn’t been interested in doing anything with Saga/Epic versions otherwise. Maybe HBO will rebroadcast them at some point.

Can’t agree there. Both I & II are classics...my attitude toward III is “why did they bother”? I know that some disagree.

To showcase his daughter with the big shnozz.

Godfather 1, Rocky, and Patton are the top of my all-time list.

It certainly wasn’t in the same league with I or II but taken in comparison to today’s offerings it is a decent film.

There were a few interesting scenes and Andy Garcia does an admirable job as Vincent, but overall the story was not as compelling at the original. Seemed like Puzo had run out of material.

Hard to argue with that.

It made more per screen, not more overall. I think it shows Coppola as a director. This is one movie that is worth shelling out $12 to see on the big screen rather than buying a Blu-Ray to watch at home.

Even Coppola's lesser movies (e.g. "Peggy Sue Got Married", "Tucker", "The Cotton Club") are just wonderful to look at.

Yes,you're correct to say that it's far better than 99.8% of the stuff that's released today. I,personally, have only seen it once...long ago...so I don't remember much about it.But I do remember being quite disappointed.

Maybe I should give it another chance when the new 4K discs are released,I intend to borrow them from my local library (which is truly outstanding) and I'll probably see III and well as I & II.

Get a good Sony,Samsung or LG 4K TV and a 4K disc player and you'll change your tune.

I could see this as a trend. There are many classic films that people have never had the chance to see on the big screen.

“Lawrence of Arabia” is an example of a film that should be seen on the big screen.

“2001, A Space Odyssey”, “Star Wars”, “Ben Hur”.

The cost of releasing the film is virtually zero. I believe films are transmitted electronically to theaters today, so there isn’t even a cost to make a print.

Godfather III had some pretty stiff competition—the two previous films are two of the greatest films ever made. So, or course, III looked bad in comparison.

But, you are right. Compared to the films of its day, III is not a bad film at all.

The top grossing films of 1990 were:

• Home Alone
• Ghost
• Dances With Wolves
• Pretty Woman
• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
• The Hunt for Red October
• Die Hard 2
• Dick Tracy
• Kindergarten Cop

I’m not sure any of those are better films than Godfather III.

His daughter was a last minute replacement.

Winona Ryder (who is a very good actress) was supposed to play the part and literally dropped out as filming started.

Although, I think the love story between the daughter and Sonny’s son added nothing to the plot. It just made no sense.

The story was supposed to be about a power struggle between Michael and Tom Hagen, but they couldn’t get Robert Duvall to sign.

So, they had to rewrite the story.
