ABC Chicago ^

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill by a vote of 422-3 Monday night making lynching a federal hate crime.

...

Now that the bill has passed the House, it's expected there will be a unified show of support from senators, including Rand Paul from Kentucky, who opposed the originally measure two years ago for being too broad.

Rand has been blocking this bill for 2 years.

This must be a win if he is now a co-sponsor.

According to sources they have changed the broad definition although I've yet to see it.

Previous version could have extended "lynching" to cover things like vandalism of property or whatever or preventing someone from exercising their religious beliefs or engaging in other federally protected activities, such as voting. and would lead to a 30 year prison sentence.

This is why Rand opposed it.

This will now pass the Senate unanimously.

So ... does this mean that black people who attack Asian people are going to be punished?

Or is this legislation just aimed at getting whitey?

Does this include duly elected former presidents?

Lynching is still a huge problem in this country. I can walk down any street in my northeastern suburban town and see black folks hanging from every oak tree, just swinging in the breeze.

What a silly question. Of course.

I really have no idea but pleased to see the broader definition stopped

Prosecutors could have used it zealously.

If I read this right, this bill would be a subset of assault, which is already a crime. Only the offense would be federalized, with all the attendant victim group politics that entails.

Yes.

The 2020 version was broader though which is why Rand opposed it.

It would have allowed corrupt prosecutors and judges to lock people up for 30 years for nothing to do with the intent of the bill

This must be a win!

What happened to the Harris Amendment that made even talking disparagingly about islam, specifically, illegal? I know that amendment passed the House a couple of years ago.

So were there any states not addressing this sort of thing adequately on their own? (Not that this sort of thing actually happens...)

Hey! This is great.

So, if someone (regardless of their color) is murdered by a mob (as Reginald Denny of “cinderblock to the head” fame after the Rodney King Riots very nearly was) then we might expect that if someone gets, oh four years in jail for trying to cave in someone’s head with a cinderblock, then maybe classifying it as a hate crime which could get tacked on might keep him in jail for six years instead?

Thank goodness this statute will never be used against “people of color” because the Soros DAs don’t think people of color can be racist.

Whew! Just think of the Burning, Looting, and Murders that will be avoided!

The only lynching in this area took place in 1888.

The 'lynchee' was W.D. French. A white guy.

I’m a believer in curb stone justice, having seen it applied several times. Others feel differently, but I have to ask, ‘what kind of civilization would eliminate justice?’ I simply do not believe that the king has the exclusive right to dispense punishment.

Back when the KKK was the military arm of the Democratic party, there was about 500 lynchings (hanging by the next until dead) a year. The people lynched were Blacks and White Republicans. Once Democrats stopped lynching, lynching stopped. There is no need for legislation now.
