Emergency room visits for eating disorders among 12- to 17-year-old girls doubled during the coronavirus pandemic, according to new research from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention β a troubling existing trend that was likely worsened by the stress of living through the prolonged crisis.
In 2020, kids actually made fewer visits to emergency departments than the year before β a decline of 21%, the CDC report found. In 2021, there was a decrease of 8% compared to 2019.
But the reason for those visits changed dramatically during the early months of the pandemic, with the proportion of emergency visits for mental health among kids rising by 24% in 5- to 11-year-olds and 31% in 12- to 17-year-old, as compared with the year before.
Among teen girls, aged 12 to 17, visits for eating disorders and tic disorders increased in both 2020 and 2021. There were also more visits for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder among teen girls in 2021.
There were also increases in visits related to behavioral health conditions among children five to 17, including self-harm, drug poisonings, socioeconomic and psychosocial concerns, and β among adolescents only β symptoms of mental health conditions and substance use.

Who will hold responsible the perpetrators of the “2 weeks to flatten the curve” hoax?
2 years in, I know people who still believe π
Are we on a timeline where the two biggest health issues for teen girls are going to be anorexia and morbid obesity? I could see that happening. That super fat model chick claims to be anorexic, so why not?
They would have time for “disorders” if they had after school jobs.
Safe and effective eating disorders?
Asking for a friend.
“The cure cannot be worse than the problem.”. Pres. Trump
Guess I should have invested in pizza.
Golly. You mean traumatizing children by isolating them for the sake of a relatively harmless virus (for kids), while telling them the world is ending and they are killing the planet as they spend 20 hours a day staring at a computer screen has a bad effect on their mental health? Go figure.
Thanks for posting. We should continue to assess the damage theyβve done so that there can be justice for the victims. They are betting our short attention spans will allow them to remain unaccountable.
LOL, did you have to post that twice for OCD...
;)
Absolutely no one.
:)
The first post read like I had variations of OCDs.
she needs a “ I beat anorexia” t shirt. Tess Holiday is it??
Does anybody know how 12 to 17 yr old girls were doing with regard to eating disorders in, say,1952 or 1962?
I just looked her up.
Dear Lord is she disgusting.
“Body shaming” deserves a place, and she is it.
They were excelling at them. No fatties to be had.
