To increase the harvest this year, I’m expanding the garden with grow bags and other containers on a patio. The problem is figuring out what size containers to use.
At the least, I’ll be growing a small variety of cabbage (Golden Acre) and iceberg lettuce. Have any of you grown cabbage or lettuce in containers? What size do you recommend? I did the google machine and it brings up charts with conflicting information. Looking for information based on actual experience.
Zone 6 in Pennsylvania if that matters.
Got 1 1/2” of frozen sleet on the ground. Looks like snow but you don’t leave footprints when you walk on it. In fact, I’ve been in and out the driveway a few times and left no tire tracks with a 6,000 lb truck.
Will be hitting the high 50s here in a couple of days. Clay will be like Jello then.
Will be ordering seed starting supplies in the next couple of days. Still price shopping and it looks like most stuff will come from ebay, some of it used.
Sick of the cold weather. Sick of messing with firewood. Sick of sitting indoors.
We got another round of ice and snow in Central Missouri this past week. Wasn’t as bad as the last round, and warmer temps are predicted for next week, so we have another frozen-to-mud transition to look forward to.
Lumberyard called yesterday. My poly panels have arrived. If I can escape the data center in time, and if the jack on my trailer isn’t frozen to the ground, I’ll pick those up later today. I still need to buy the framing lumber, but I can’t start the project while the ground is frozen, so no super rush there.
Think I’ll get my seed order into Jung’s today too. Considering the current geopolitical situation, buying some extra might not be a bad idea right now.
Greetings from southern New Hampshire, where I have dug out from a significant dump of snow, yesterday. We got close to 8” of snow and during a break, yesterday afternoon, I was able to shovel our long driveway. This morning, there is maybe a 1/2” of fresh snow on it…very drive-able.
Warm snap leading up to this storm allowed me to get a head start on my spring cleaning projects. I was able to pick up some 2x4 frames for cheap, last Autumn and I disassembled them and have some 76 8’ ones, neatly stacked for spring. I need to pull the screws out of the 4’ ones and stack them. I also moved one of our John Deere 318s away from the back drive
It is kind of a bummer, looking at all of the snow, but the water table will love it.
Seed acquisition is in progress. I am going to try growing pickling cucumbers and making pickles, this coming season. Actually, I want to grow regular cucumbers so that I can make my Grandma Schulz’s cucumber and onion salad, this summer. It is a great summer salad and brings back wonderful memories.
Have faith, spring is coming!
Does anyone have experience growing turmeric with which one can make ‘golden tea?’ I’ve not tried it yet (maybe this year) but unless you are in zone 8 or warmer iirc it must be brought in during the colder weather.
I have a stressed put wife who is stressing em put every day with worries about pur home sale and moving to Texas (hint she is not doing well with the “unknown” factors.)
She peppers me with the same questions which we don’t have the answers to and won’t have the answers to until....wait for it....until we have the answers!
I don’t have a garden this year because we will be moving and that wpuld be my main destressor.
I am dodging carbs and sugars in my effort to lose more weight (down 70lbs and want to drop another 15-25) so scotch is not an option.
I think I need a Garden Humor meme thread Diana.....save me from breaking something in this house!....:)
Mower getting serviced, new blades & a power wash tomorrow. I got lucky ... just contacted the guy tonight, coming tomorrow. His schedule is usually slammed - must have had a cancellation.
Been a weird day - spilled a very large container of laundry detergent on the floor. ALL of it was out of the bottle & it was at least half full. Of course, it seeped under two throw rugs that were close by. I also stepped in it before I realized what had happened. It was a real rodeo to get it cleaned up - I don’t recommend spilling laundry detergent, especially not in any quantity.
A few other “incidents” occurred during the day and the chicken tractor “discussion” I tried to have didn’t go well either.
So ... decided to put on hold the 3 plumbing projects I had lined up ... I can only imagine what might have happened if I’d tried to do some plumbing. A vision of water geysers comes to mind.
I believe the saying is “a better day is only a day away” ... looking forward to seeing the mower guy tomorrow ... tomorrow! h/t Little Orphan Annie.
