Newman was in his 50’s when he did that film and it was a pretty physical movie. It is flat out one of the funniest I had ever seen. The Hanson Brothers alone made that film just so wild.

I missed “Slap Shot” at the theater but enjoyed it years later when I saw it on TV. It is both entertaining and true to its subject matter.

“Reg, Reg, that reminds me. I was coachin’ in Omaha in 1948 and Eddie Shore sends me this guy who was a terrible masturbator, you know, couldn’t control himself. Why, he would get deliberate penalties so he could get over in the penalty box all by himself and damned if he wouldn’t... you know...”

Slapshot is both wise and incredibly funny right from the start. It's kind of amazing it was written by a woman. Obviously the kind of woman every man wants to meet! George Roy Hill was a genius director.
Five stars.

Newman’s best line ever. Could never show it now, though.

A friend of mine put together an adult street hockey team for a rec league in Providence, RI back in the late 80’s.
Their team name was ‘The Hansen Bothers’ and after a couple games they led the rec league in penalties. They got kicked out eventually, but they had a blast.

The original was so much better than the Disney remake. A subtle masterpiece.
