...Republicans are more likely than Democrats to want parents to be the only decision makers when it comes to protecting their kids from both the coronavirus and controversial ideas. In polls, they are more inclined to say that protecting personal liberty is more important than the common good; that masks and vaccines shouldn’t be mandated in schools; and that parents should get a say in what children are taught. “I feel like, as a parent, we know what’s best for our children,” Erica, a Virginia mother...told me. “If you want to wear a mask, please do. But please don’t force me to have my child wear a mask.”
Democrats, meanwhile, are more likely to express interest in protecting the common good. They’re more likely to feel that, in school, students should learn to fix social problems. And in polls, they’re more likely than Republicans to trust teachers and public-health officials. Caroline Pharr, a Democratic mom in Helena, Montana, supports universal masking in schools in part because it “protects communities, including those that can’t choose to get vaccinated yet,” she told me. “Wearing a mask doesn’t just impact you; it impacts everyone around you.” She thinks that public-health officials, not individual parents, should be the ones to decide when masks come off in schools.
...
Still, the fight over whether to prioritize parental control or community well-being has played out in other school-related imbroglios across the country in recent months....While conservatives focus on parental rights, liberals are more likely to endorse the idea that curricula and school public-health guidelines should leave no vulnerable person behind. In an op-ed..., the parent group Loudon4all emphasized the potential benefits of universal masking for other people, writing that it “is not just to keep students healthy; it keeps educators healthy and prevents community spread.”

“The common good” is all you need to know to determine the author is a pompous Leftist who thinks communism is “cool.”
So long as the Pinkos are trying to define the “common good”, the it will be the common bad.
Case. Rested.
Blue parents can bundle up their kids and themselves in Tyvek suits and N95’s or keep them home if they want. Equally, Red parents are also making a (more well-informed) decision, which is all that’s wanted - the ability to make one’s own decision.
Personal liberty is the primary common good. Masks are worthless. Kids are darn near bulletproof to COVID. It’s pretty damned strange that we’re still finding time to squabble about this in the waning tail end of the sickness.
If the schools switched what they taught, then the two groups would switch sides. The Democrats would be whining about parents’ rights to teach communism, and the GOP would say the schools are great, teaching patriotism and good citizenship.
A society that devalues parental decisions isn’t for the common good.
There is no objective Common Good - it’s always some individual’s opinion. Even if it’s a majority of individual opinions, it’s always just an opinion. Always. It’s an illusion.
False dichotomy.
Premise masks help and is for common good is false.
This article is incorrect. Conservatives are very keen on the public good. We just define it differently. For leftists, the public good is achieved by wearing masks. For conservatives, the public good is achieved by shipping the leftists off to Venezuela.
On what planet do vaccines that don’t prevent the illness have anything to do with the “common good?”
The underlying philosophical difference being ...
parent's rights = what is best for my children?
the common good = my children can be sacrificed for the state that decides what is best for all of us
Rush put it best: Liberals measure compassion by how much aid they give to people. Conservatives measure compassion by how many people no longer need aid.

There is no such thing as the common good. It’s a ruse to get people to obey. Anything done for the common good isn’t.
Shitlibs always plead “the common good” in the service of tyranny.
there have been hardly any deaths of youngsters- even with hte covid 19 and delta- forget omicron- there haven’t been any deaths that i’m aware of- and very few in adults- the pandemic is over and kids do NOT need masks, vaccines or to even social distance!
Masks and vaccines and social distancing for kids is child cruelty and totally unecessary
The ‘Common Good’ woudl have been to protect seniors with multiple comorbidities- and leave the rest of the population alone!
Commom good? Personal rights? Protecting their kids? What’s best for our children?
I ask, what does the Golden Rule say?
