Last week, I was visiting with my step mother and were discussing Covid and it's impact on life.
My step mom said that after the Covid shut down, that 30% attendance has dropped 30% at her church , although there is no live streaming any more.
She said that they used to have two services--one for the old and one for the young, but now they have merged them into a single service.
Apparently the young people desire LOUD music, so the church's way of accommodating the older people is to hand out ear plugs.
I did attend this church one time a while ago, and the music really was near rock concert level in decibels.
Is loud music really this important to that many people? Can anyone here relate?
If it was about being faithful to God even when it's a struggle, we'd give it a slower tempo blues feel. After the sermon, because the sermon ended with God helping us because He's more faithful to us than we are to Him, we played the same song but at a faster tempo and more energy (to express God's faithfulness helping us be faithful to Him).
Ppfffttttt
That will be an entirely different experience in a different dimension.
To suggest/insist that a high decibel level glorifies God is absurd.
How much of the New Testament talks about music?
LOL
I dont know, I guess I have a lot of different thoughts on the subject.
Ive told stories here about a circus, er, I mean service that my aunt took me to already back in the 80s where all the music was loud Christian rock. Lights and lasers with words flashing on the walls.
I didnt feel it was right for a service. I dont have a problem with the style of music in a church just not as part of the service. It wasnt worshipful in that congregationally participatory way, it was just a musical experience.
But, if youre going to listen to rock then yes, it should be loud. Part of the experience is the way it feels, no, not in that soulful way that some people say it moves them but the actual physical feeling that some songs produce.
When I left for the military my church was using the hymnal they had used for a long time. I liked the music, the sound and the messages. I sang and I participated.
When I came back they had changed the hymnal. All the songs are crap musically and lyrically and the messages arent inspiring in the least. Somehow it sounds to me like the equivalent of what I imagine dipshit hippy music was in the late 1800 & early 1900 time frame. Im not sure how to explain it, it feels like nursery rhymes put to campfire songs. I dont participate and I dont even want to hear it.
This has brought me to the point that if I cant have my old hymns back and participate then Id just as soon listen to the new rock stuff which of course would have to be loud. All the present hymnal does is make me want to stay away.
Loved Geoff Moore and the Distance, back in the day!
How much needs to talk about it?
‘why should the devil have all the good muuuussssic?’

the 1st time I visit a church, I like to tell the pastor an off color joke, If he gives me the stink eye I aint in the flock.
some of them tell you no dancing, no hugging, handshakes are suspicious ..
“I get tired of the 7-11 hymns: a seven line verse repeated eleven times.”
Maybe you ought to shout it out 11 times really fast and then throw you hands up and shout “I’m first, I win.”
“Nothing today can compete with “How Great Thou Art””
This divine song always brings tears to my eyes as it was played at my dad’s funeral. 😰
Even gas stations have excruciating loud music blasting out at the pump. There is no escape.
150 Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.
**I get tired of the 7-11 hymns: a seven line verse repeated eleven times.**
A young woman that sings solo once in awhile introduced us to a song where there is a line, “He is for you”, repeated at least that many times it seems.
Yes the young people want that rock and or roll music and the older, like us want that old time religious music with hymn books.
I thought Stryper was okay back in the 1980's, not worth wearing out for decades like I have a lot of other bands from my teenage years. But Stryper came out of retirement a decade or so ago and put out some stuff I really like. Check out their Reborn, Passion, Jesus Is Alright (a metal redo of the classic), When Did I See You Cry, No More Hell to Pay, and especially Yaweh. Warning: could cause irresistible cranking of the volume.
Oh yeah.
Here’s a good idea...
We’ve all read about the talking ass in the bible.
Don’t be one.
