Big Ten investigating postgame fight in Badgers win over Wolverines (Wisconsin)

MADISON, Wis. — It was a tale of two halves as Wisconsin blew out Michigan Sunday, 77-63.

The first half was back-and-forth. Neither team gained an inch, and the score at halftime was tied, 31-31.

But Greg Gard’s halftime speech must’ve stirred something, as the Badgers came out of the locker room on fire. A massive scoring run in the first 10 minutes gave the Badgers a double-digit lead, which they held onto to grab the win.

That scoring run was driven in large part by Johnny Davis. The man who has been the game-changer for the Badgers changed the game once again, scoring 25 points.

In all, Wisconsin had five players score double figures.

The win moves the Badgers to 21-5, 12-4 in conference play.

The end of the game was marred by an exchange of punches from players on both teams. Michigan head coach Juwan Howard and Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard got in each others’ faces before the fight, and Howard appeared to slap Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft in the face.

The Big ten Conference issued a statement following Sunday’s contest:

The Big Ten Conference is aware of a physical altercation involving Michigan Head Coach Juwan Howard at the conclusion of the Michigan Wolverines and Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball game. The conference is in contact with both member institutions and is currently assessing the incident. The conference will provide more information and will take swift and appropriate disciplinary action when it completes its review.

“Let ’em beat the crap out of each other.”

But, but, but...It wouldn’t be “a good look”. The mere appearance of things are everything nowadays.

Disgusting behavior?

That ain’t a fight.

That’s a few girls slapping.

You haven’t been in a staten island nightclub fight with 40 Italians going at each other for blood :)

Or the high school race wars back in the 80s

Now the only time I make a fist is when I’m enraged that there’s no more Oreos in the house :)

I went to college when the Badgers and the Fighting Sioux used to clash---literally.

Lord, but they hated each other. When the Gophers came to town the fans would fling dead gophers onto the ice...and when the Badgers came...yes, I actually saw a dead badger chucked out over the glass, pre-game.

And...AND...one game kicked off, so to speak, when the two teams started crap-talking at center ice, during warm-ups, BEFORE the puck dropped, and suddenly they went at it.

I mean, big time, gloves flew, headgear flew, and battle broke out. There were something like 140 penalty minutes PRIOR to the game...took coaches, second-liners, even campus security and cops to separate the teams.

Your daddy might have got a kick out of it all. Let me tell you, the fans sure did!

Weird times we live in where “words are violence” and actual violence can be justified if the perpetrators are considered a member of a “victim class”. Fact is Juwan Howard threw a punch. He should be gone regardless the provocation.

I read another article. Howard kept a press on in the last minute while the other coach called a time out and put in reserves and scrubs. Howard’s team stole the ball and got a layup. The other coach called another time out to settle his players and get an additional 10 seconds to inbound. No press by the starters, no second timeout. There was no provocation. Even after a little time for reflection, Howard did not apologize in postgame. He should be gone.

I really don’t care what Coach Gard did or said. Howard threw a punch — he needs to be suspended pending a public apology to both teams. You can’t allow this kind of stuff to go on between NCAA coaches.

Howard has a history of not being able to control his temper.

Is that wrong?

Juwan’s behavior will be excused due to Coach Gard’s white privilege and oppression. At most, a sternly worded statement to both coaches.

Howard should have been fired ten minutes after this. I understand that he has been suspended only. This is the second time he has gone ballistic. Last year during the Big 10 Tournament he nearly got into fisticuffs with Maryland coach Mark Turgeon. If he has not been fired, Michigan will soon regret it as the next incident will be worse.

Yes, Howard felt the Wisconsin coach dissed Michigan by calling a timeout with only seconds remaining, although for some reason Howard had Michigan switch to a full-court press with only seconds remaining and down by 14. Regardless, that’s all just a smokescreen. Howard threw a punch. Is this the man UMich wants representing the university? You can bet that if Jim Harbaugh did something like this he’d be gone in a New York - or Ann Arbor - minute.
