They are using a rule that the lefties put in place to allow immigrants to play for the national teams.

I’m not sure if this is correct. I believe the rule was put in place to allow players who defected from countries behind the Iron Curtain in the 1980s to play for their new home countries. Doesn’t sound like something a “lefty” would do.
