A Dutch teenager completely forgot his native tongue after waking up from surgery and could only speak English, doctors have revealed.
The unidentified 17-year-old boy, thought to be from Maastricht, was in hospital for a knee operation following an injury during a football match.
But after he awoke from the anesthesia, he was unable to speak or understand any of the medics, who were speaking in Dutch.
Instead, he was only able to talk in English — a language he had only been learning at school and never used outside of the classroom.
The boy also failed to recognise his own parents and believed that he was in the US, specifically in Utah, a country he had never visited.
After 24 hours, the teenager 'spontaneously' recovered both his ability to speak and understand his native language after friends came to visit him.
And doctors who treated him, at the Maastricht University Medical Center, claim he has retained his native tongue since.
Detailing his case in a medical journal, scientists believe he developed an extremely rare case of foreign language syndrome.(snip)
With just eight cases recorded worldwide in scientific literature there are scant details about foreign language syndrome.
How common is it?
Extraordinarily rare, there have been only eight post-operative cases recorded in scientific literature since 1999.

And voting for Romney.
Well, in the Bible, we read that many received the gift of tongues and spontaneously were able to speak in foreign languages.
Acts 2:1-6
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
Most Dutch are bi-lingual and learn English as a second language.
I have actually heard of weird things like this happening but it is utmost rare, assuming it is even possible. People supposedly have woken up from surgeries or comas and have British accents while having never vistied the UK or even been around British native people in their lives.
It ranks up there in the genre of topics for late night radio of Close Encouters of the Extraterrestrial Kind........

A friend has lost short-term memory after surgery. Thought to be an after-effect of the anesthesia.
95% of all the people who have ever lived are alive today. If everybody has been reincarnated where did all the new people come from?
The numbers do not work. The numbers cannot be made to work. It is impossible.
“Reincarnation is mathematically impossible.”
I have never even heard of anyone trying to outline a proof of that conjecture.
If you have any further info or links I would like to see them.
Accents come from how we pronounce and how long we hold our vowel sounds. A stroke just may cause your speech to sound like a different accent.
“95% of all the people who have ever lived are alive today. If everybody has been reincarnated where did all the new people come from?

Firstly you are starting from a false premise.
There is no evidence we have any clue at all about how many people have lived on the earth.
We have no idea how many civilizations have come and gone, population counts or even what technology they may have had.
Was the kid an adoptee from the US? Are we certain they operated on the correct individual?
“Often it was attached spirits.”
When I interned 12 years ago for a “ghost hunt” show hete in L.A., one of the producers was a writer for the X F-ILES, and has a credit on a certain episode.
He told us back then, there are cases of a wandering spirit inhabiting a living person, in cases forcibly which explains the “foreign language” mystery when the subject does not speak that language.
How did he come to this? It happened to his sister when she recovered from the hospital.
“95% of all the people who have ever lived are alive today. “
You suck at math, right? Your numbers suggest only 375 million were born before all those living today, when estimates are more than 100 billion have lived. 100 billion versus 0.35 billion. Not very good math.
Reminded me of Quantum Leap.
““West of the Rockies.......caller.....you’re on the air.....”
The great Art Bell did around 3 episodes about spirits “invading” another person. I befriended a dude on KFI here in L.A. who would give us the tapes many years ago for free, and the subject would be broadcast days before Ghost to Ghost.
Did he think he was mormon? 😏
....... Somewhere in an alternate universe there is some poor schmuck in Utah who thinks he lives in Holland and can only speak Dutch ..... Ya .... It happens sometimes ....
Or…since some people thing “reality” is just a giant simulation and we are just programs running in it, maybe his program code got corrupted and had to wait until the next update cycle to restore his Dutch language speaking abilities.
Or…since he is a teenager, maybe he was just jerking everybody’s chain.
Somewhere in Provo a teenager is trying to order a Big Mac and fries in Dutch...
And putting the dog in the dog cage and riding around with it on the roof of his car.
