A kitschy attraction at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf has permanently closed

LATEST Feb. 14, 9:01 a.m. A spokesperson for Merlin Entertainments, the company that previously managed the San Francisco Dungeon, confirmed to SFGATE that it closed the attraction in June 2021.

"The Dungeon brand remains intrinsically popular across the world, however the current climate allowed the brand to look at alternatives for the Dungeon experience in the US," the spokesperson said in an email. "Within San Francisco, Merlin Entertainments has the popular Madame Tussauds wax museum which remains a favorite for both tourists and locals."

Feb. 13, 1:15 p.m. It’s the end of an era for one of the campiest tourist attractions in Fisherman’s Wharf.

The San Francisco Dungeon, an hourlong dark ride and immersive attraction tucked away in the Jefferson Street building that once housed a wax museum, has shuttered for good.

“Like The Gold Rush of 1849 and a saloon brawl, all good things come to an end! The San Francisco Dungeon has told its last tales and is now permanently closed,” read a statement on the attraction’s website. “But, be warned, like the ghosts of Alcatraz, our mischief may find new ways to haunt you.”

Well, the whole stinkin' city is a dungeon now. How can one little museum compete with that?

This is not a historic attraction, last time I was in SF (after the Northridge earthquake, ) it didn’t exist. So no loss.

I live near the area, but I haven’t visited The Wharf for about 25 years. Back then, there was a small store called
The Christmas Store. It was nice to enter in late July and hear Xmas music, smell pine and apple cider, see all kinds of oranaments and snowglobes on display.
I would suspect a Non-PC store like that has been closed for a long time.

Wife and I visited SF about 15 years ago. The areas we saw were clean and we felt safe. Food was great and the cool Sept. weather was a nice change from Georgia. Glad we made it before the area crashed and burned.

How do you like that? A top SF tourist attraction, loved by millions, opened and closed and I never heard about it once.

My favorite tourist trap restaurant was "Forbes Island." We did a family outing there some years ago and it was a blast. You ate underwater, looking out through windows at the bay. You had to take a boat to get to the island.

Just take a drive downtown. I had the most unpleasant opportunity for a major business deal meeting there. The other party was from the East Coast and had never been to San Fransisco. They insisted a trip down at Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch and a short tour so they could see the Golden Gate Bridge. I advised them not to since we had a nice comfortable meeting place at the hotel by SFO. They were astounded at how filthy and disgusting it was downtown. I use to go as a kid to visit family and remember it being clean, fun, and safe (for the most part). The place is absolutely disgusting now.

That’s what I was thinking. Are used to take people to Fishermans wharf all the time and I don’t remember the dungeon.
