Chloe Lumb from Redcar complained about neck and jaw pain and repeatedly sought medical help but her condition was left untreated

A 24-year-old's death could've been prevented had doctors diagnosed and treated her rare condition.

Chloe May Lumb, who suffered from aortic dissection, died at her home on Greenlands Road, in Redcar, on January 8, 2021.

Aortic dissection is a serious condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body's main artery.

The mum-of-two sought medical help after feeling unwell and experiencing jaw and neck pain, TeessideLive reports.

Blood tests and a chest X-ray were carried out at James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough on January 4.

But just a few days later, Mrs Lumb would be dead.

At an inquest at Teesside Coroners' Court on Friday, February 11, it was heard there were multiple missed opportunities that could've prevented her early death.

While at hospital, the Teessider was given a CT scan when she should have been given an ECG gated CT scan.

The court also heard she should have been seen by other experienced doctors as despite the issue showing on the scan it went undiagnosed.

Delays also meant other staff did not see the scan results and clinicians said she presented well and so discharged the young woman.

Cardiologist at James Cook, Dr Andrew Sutton, told the inquest he believed if she was diagnosed correctly she would still be alive.

Following her hospital visit, Mrs Lumb called the emergency department the following day reporting that her pain had not gone away.

Staff told her to ring her GP who then prescribed painkillers. Three days later, she collapsed at her home and died.

Had Mrs Lumb received corrective surgery, her death could have been prevented.

An internal investigation was carried out by the trust and Dr Sutton told the inquest that significant changes have since been made.

These include new guidelines put in place, extensive training and new rules on reviewing scans.

A South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson said: “Our sympathies go out to Chloe’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

“We completed a detailed review of Chloe’s care after her death, identified areas of learning and have taken action to reduce the risk of this occurring again.

“We have already shared the learning and the actions taken with regional colleagues across the North East to raise awareness around the diagnosis of aortic dissection.

“Following today’s inquest, we will be sharing this learning with national societies and bodies.

“Aortic dissection is a rare but tragic cause of sudden death in patients of all ages and frequently linked to genetic conditions and our clinicians work closely with the Northern Genetics Service to provide screening for families affected.

“The Marfan Trust and Aortic Dissection Awareness UK provide information, support and advice for people at risk and those who are affected."

Coroner Welsh recorded a narrative verdict at the inquest and said the death was a result of undiagnosed and therefore untreated aortic dissection.

The coroner issued a Regulation 28 Prevention of Future Deaths report to explain what went wrong and how to stop similar deaths.

Aortic Dissection is almost always fatal. Even in the hospital.

When I worked at a hospital in emergency communications, these happened every couple of months in our ER. (There are special communications procedures with this.). In several years only one person survived long enough to get to the surgical suite.
