The ones with electric lift pumps are not too bad. Mechanical injector and lift pumps are a different story. Sometimes it is “hope I can get this to light off before the batteries die.”

Unfortunately some of the common rail units are self-priming.
The mechanical ones, not so much. Pump and purge and diesel runs everywhere. Big mess and hope the batteries don’t die. In this weather and at the hands of an amateur a truck out of diesel with a mechanical fuel pump and injector is destined to become at least a 40,000 lb yard ornament for at least a good while.
