The 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing are off to anything but a roaring start, with viewership down to an all-time low.
Thursday’s primetime coverage averaged just 7.25 million viewers on NBC. The previous low was the 8.5 million that tuned in for the final night of competition at last year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo, per Sports Media Watch.
As OutKick’s Clay Travis noted on Twitter Friday, Americans are simply choosing not to watch, as the Olympics carry on in Beijing amid the ongoing Chinese genocide against Muslim Uyghurs.
For retrospect, Thursday’s number is down 55% from the 16 million that watched the opening night of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.
The U.S. notably did not send any diplomatic representatives to the Games, in a protest against China’s human rights violations.
“We will not be contributing to the fanfare of the Games. U.S. diplomatic or official representation would treat these Games as business as usual in the face of [China’s] egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang, and we simply can’t do that,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Dec. 6.
NBC’s broadcast, to the surprise of many, didn’t shy away from acknowledging the issues at hand in China. Olympics host Mike Tirico began his opening monologue with a message for Americans watching at home.
“Everything and everyone attached to these Games is facing questions,” Tirico said.
Nothing wrong with Katarina though.
Trucker protest—It’s way better and full of people who are incredibly strong at freezing cold temperatures.
Not watching anything else other than Canadian trucker live-streams.
Won’t watch woke athletes pee on their country. Won’t watch Wokelympics held by genocidal ChiCom slavers.
There’s Olympics on?
Well I kept seeing threads but wasn’t paying attention.
💤💤😪😪😴😴🥱🥱
I thought you would be more of a Nancy Kerrigan fan.
Good. No self respecting American should have anything to do with the Chinese Olympics.
I just looked up some pitchers of her on the internet. She looks too top-heavy to skate now.
Dana Loesch mentioned “the 12-man downhill sleigh-ride, or something” the other day. I LOL’d
Yes, the Olympics have gotten so boring over the years. The TV coverage is awful. They spend more time on sob stories than they do showing the events. Politics has taken over starting when Carter had the US boycott the Olympics. They should just hold them in Greece every time and have all the countries chip in to pay for it. When I was a kid (a long time ago) it was all about the US vs the Soviet Union, but that is so last century just like James Bond movies. It’s all a big yawner now.
Yeah, and besides they play a better brand of street hockey, eh!
Definitely
How many Uyghurs are watching?
If you haven’t yet, you should check out the Margot Robie movie “I, Tonya.”
Tonya, Nancy, and Katerina were all stunning back in the day. Of the three, Nancy still looks much like her former Olympiad self.
7.25 million viewers ... well that beats a month of CNN viewers.
B) Everyone knows it will be a total commie boot-licking, politically correct, woke barf-fest.
C) The Olympics have been increasingly unwatchable for at least 20 years.
That's why Americans have started losing interest (even before the CCP fiasco). It should be like this. Cover a hockey game here and there. Speed skating races. Figure skating (apparently they're popular). But NBC is so leftist that they are out of touch with the viewing habits of an average American.
Good. My mother-in-law is coming to visit for 6 weeks and is very interested in watching. I’ve told my wife we will not be allowing the Wulympics in this house.
Watched 10-15 minutes of the opening ceremony, and then punted. Would rather see the events (with the volume down).
“choosing not to watch.” I watched 30 minutes of mens skating. No more. The stadium was dark, empty, and athletes wore masks as if they are overweight and diabetic.
Another organization goes woke... and broke.
