They could play live though. Like America. Others of the same era can’t say the same.
Sorry, I meant Melanie Safka.
“Amazing just how bad today’s music is.”
Very strange.
Perhaps a story about my son at about age 10 will give a clue. He was pecking on an electronic keyboard in a store. I was encouraged. I asked if he liked how it sounded. He said he liked the dog sound (which was one of the sound selections).
But why so many people like today’s mainstream pop music is a real mystery to me.
I did not know that but it makes sense. I was so taken by the sentiment contained in the refrain that I played this song at my daughters memorial.
My father died last February. I created a video memorial of his life using music that was either relevant to his life or expressed my feelings about him. The video is almost 30 minutes long and includes clips of him talking about his life and family. It took me months to create because I’d never done something like this before. One of the pieces I included was this song. I remembered it from my teen years and after looking it up I found out Gates had written it for his father. It was perfect.
I definitely wore out my 8 track tape of Bread, still have the 8 track. This song came out in 1972 when I was a sophomore, year two of dating the hubby in high school 50 yrs. ago now, married going on 44 1/2.
51 years ago I was dating my husband who is now 82. Our song was “I Want To Make It With You”. We play it for each other, now and then.
David Gates also wrote “Popsicles and Icicles”
What about "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft"?
Yeah and Leon finally expressed his faith when he issued in 2006 a fantastic album, “A Mighty Flood”. Since it was against the grain of his image, it was not heavily marketed; but it is phenomenal.
Leon also wrote a song Karen did w/ Ella Fitzgerald, “Masquerade”.
I seem to recall another person who did that one, I think he was a jazz guitar player.
It’s extremely catchy, haunting, unusually complex chord changes.
After he died, his family released his last (I think) album == again, very diverse from his usual style. On it he sings Masquerade. The whole album is romantic and had a lot in common with the big-band sound from days gone by. It is quite an experience. I bought it the instant I heard about it, pre-release, and waited to receive it for about 3 months.
Leader of the Band, by Dan Fogelberg, is another song with the same theme and sensibility.
George Benson maybe?
I will listen to this. I’ve always liked Fogelberg.
I just read that Elvin Bishop went to the same school as well.
What was in the water there? Sheesh.
That is sweet! I picked Chicago’s Colour My World for our wedding song, not awful but always wish I had picked Close to You by the Carpenters. The hubby has the ‘eyes of blue’ and ‘hair of gold’, so I think of it as my song to him.
