Anyone struggling w/ a sick Dad or even a lost Dad - this is the song for you.
Happy Friday to all Freepers.
I think they made out all right.
David Gates was from Oklahoma, same as Jimmy Webb, another fantastic composer of mid-century America.
I always saw David Gates as the male analog to Karen Carpenter... and that’s a compliment.
Good comparison. Karen was better looking though ;)
For the younger ones, this was also covered by the group *NSYNC about twenty to twenty five years ago
40 years next year...hard to believe how time flies.
Her angelic voice lives on thankfully. I won’t comment on her family. Best to just leave that for them to deal with.
Gates and Bread sung some of the greatest love songs of the ‘70’s, great voice too.
Amazing just how bad today’s music is.
If this song is a 9, then today’s music is a 1. Sad indeed.
Jimmy Griffin had some good songs with them too, especially “Look What You’ve Done”.
David Gates is very talented and the fact that he wrote it for his father is wonderful.
Thanks for this great post. Did you realize that David Gates, Leon Russell (nee Russell Bridges) and Anita Bryant were all at the same Tulsa (Edison) High School at the same time? Phenomenal!
Good point. Also see my post 13.
I have the Bread Anthology album.
I also have David Gates’ later solo album.
Every song is melodic and worth listening to. My personal favorite is still his iconic song simply entitled, IF.
Plus, David Gates himself turned out Ok in his personal life. He’s retired and still married to his wife. He has successful children. A life well lived who has enriched many people worldwide through his music.

Never thought of it that way, but you’re spot on.
RE: I always saw David Gates as the male analog to Karen Carpenter... and that’s a compliment.
Here’s a little trivia... one of the hit songs of the Carpenters was written by a member of the Bread.
The song — FOR ALL WE KNOW (Love, Look At The Two of Us).
Wow. I love all three of them, and never, ever thought of that. Amazing.
Leon was an absolute legend - I know from my Glen Campbell/Wrecking Crew fandom. The two of them in a studio would produce hit after hit.
Bread was pretty much David Gates, Jimmy Griffin and some members of The Wrecking Crew.
Melody [Safka] is like that too. Unfortunately, her husband passed away in 2010. They had three kids.
