Bread was brilliant. So underrated and so touching (in a good way).

Bread was brilliant. So underrated and so touching (in a good way). I think they made out all right.
David Gates was from Oklahoma, same as Jimmy Webb, another fantastic composer of mid-century America.

I always saw David Gates as the male analog to Karen Carpenter... and that’s a compliment.

For the younger ones, this was also covered by the group *NSYNC about twenty to twenty five years ago

Gates and Bread sung some of the greatest love songs of the ‘70’s, great voice too.

David Gates is very talented and the fact that he wrote it for his father is wonderful.

Thanks for this great post. Did you realize that David Gates, Leon Russell (nee Russell Bridges) and Anita Bryant were all at the same Tulsa (Edison) High School at the same time? Phenomenal!

I have the Bread Anthology album.
I also have David Gates’ later solo album.
Every song is melodic and worth listening to. My personal favorite is still his iconic song simply entitled, IF.
Plus, David Gates himself turned out Ok in his personal life. He’s retired and still married to his wife. He has successful children. A life well lived who has enriched many people worldwide through his music.

Just pointing out that this song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 charts exactly 50 years ago this week.
It would get to number 5 just a few weeks later.
