$1.9M armored car heist case still cold 20 years later

Monday marks the 20th anniversary of the Berkshire Armored Car services heist in Rutland. The armed robber got away with $1.9 million and has never been caught.

From there, the masked robber put the money in a stolen van and fled the scene. The van was eventually found but the man was not.

“The FBI is obviously involved in the case. We’re following up leads and working on the investigation. That’s all I have to say right now,” FBI Agent Lionel Shapiro said in 2002.

“There was one guard there, and the secondary guard came in and they each had half of the combination. There was definitely some insider knowledge here,”

Cassarino says he still wonders why the FBI never questioned his friend who had moved to Arizona after being the manager of Berkshire for years before the heist.

Today, the statute of limitations on the heist is up both locally and federally, the case has been closed and handed over to the IRS. So if the robber was found out, the person could only be charged for tax fraud and not the actual act of stealing the money.

And inflation is eating deeper into the secret stash.

Would law enforcement know if that money was being used, because they have serial numbers?

With that volume of cash, you’d assume they had the serials (or at least some of them) but you never know.

The other side of me wonders if there was an actual robbery - or was this some way to explain away a lack of cash somewhere. Bank heists don’t go unsolved - robbers aren’t that bright or able to keep the cash out of sight.

Must have watched too many Benecek episodes, where the twist was that the motive and crime wasn’t what it seemed.

If they were laundered in some way, those physical dollars may not even be in the US to track.

“The FBI is obviously involved in the case.”

Is this a confession?

A happy ending.

But how did he maintain access to the cash?
And some laundry action would be helpful.

Since the heat is off now, I think it’s finally safe for me to spend the money. 😁
