NEWS FROM WASHINGTON: Five Hundred Millions Already Expended for the War; Remarkably Good Health of the Army (1/31/1862)

WASHINGTON, Thursday, Jan. 30.

The full account in the TIMES, yesterday, of the Burnside Expedition was a timely relief, not only to the public, but to the Government. The suspense had become painful, and the brief official dispatch of Gen. BURNSIDE by no means relieved the anxiety. The messenger who brought this official dispatch, was requested by Gen. MCCLELLAN to write out a detailed statement of all that happened to the expedition after its sailing, for publication in the newspapers. The messenger replied that it was not necessary, as a correspondent of the NEW YORK TIMES had come on with him, having as perfect an account as it was possible to give, which would immediately be published The TIMES was in great request last night among officers of the army and navy, and was read with avidity and satisfaction. Members of Gen. MCCLELLAN's staff to-day expressed their satisfaction with the excellent report of the TIMES, which was the only paper in the country having the highly important and assuring intelligence from the grand Expedition.

THE PACIFIC RAILROAD.

The House Committee on the Pacific Railroad met to-day, and determined to report a bill, but without recommending its passage or rejection.

THE HEALTH OF THE ARMY.

Rev. Dr. WESTON, of Trinity Church, who has recently visited various divisions of the Army of the Potomac, says the health of the soldiers is remarkable, and is even improving in this weather, and that most of the men are in better condition than if they were at home. He found one New-Jersey regiment that had not lost one man by sickness in over five months. An ex-surgeon of the English army, who has seen much service, says he never saw an army so bountifully fed and provided for,
