How about we mind our own business?

It has nothing to do with the US.

Look what we did with the Panama Canal.

Yeah.

We gave it to CHINA.

You are certified free of the thinking virus.

Remove your mask comrade and breath.

“Hong Kong was always a Chinese city.”

Hong Kong didn’t exist.

It was not a city before the Emperor sold it to the UK forever.

Don’t say things you know nothing about.

How about you just ask the people of the Falklands if they want to remain a British Overseas Territory or become a part of Argentina and honor THEIR choice?

Why does Argentina want the Falklands? The only thing you can do there is raise sheep, and the Argentines like beef.

Container ships are not using the Panama Canal so it’s not that big of a deal anymore.

Fishing and mineral rights.

*the Panama Canal was given away by Jimmy Carter with affirmation by the Senate. Reagan had nothing to do with it.*
Reagan was a big part of the conversation.
I never said he had a vote-you don’t listen.

*the Chinese now run the Canal.
So what? We can go in there anytime we have to. It’s in the agreement.

*Why don’t you double check on which president signed the Panama Canal treaty and get back to us.*
You don’t listen either.

*You’ve got Brit issues...Irish Catholic perhaps ...*
Bite your tongue! Polak.

??? The area now known as Hong Kong was occupied by the Chinese for centuries before the British forced the Chinese to hand it over (at the end of the First Opium War).

That is not a particular knock against the British. That’s just the way things were done in those days. If you were strong enough to take it, you took it.

You’re wrong.

It was a rock. I figure some people lived there, but it was not a city.

It had a deep harbor, that’s why the British wanted it. The Chinese cared nothing about a deep water port.

The British turned it in to a port city and it got its name that way - fragrant harbor. The opium smelled sweet.

So stop saying things that are not true.

Yes, correct. The area now known as Hong Kong was once just a collection of small villages. But that’s not the point. The point is that the area was Chinese, like forever. Then the British took it by threat of force.

This is quite different than the Falklands situation, which was the topic of the original poster.

The point is you misrepresented things.

For no reason. It has no bearing at all on the Falklands.

Well, I suppose I could have said “the collection of small villages that would eventually become the city of Hong Kong” instead of just saying “Hong Kong”.

> It has no bearing at all on the Falklands. <

The original poster made the connection by talking about both the Falklands and Hong Kong. He drew the comparison. I just commented on it.

Anyway, I have exhausted my interest on this topic. You may have the last word if you wish. At any rate, enjoy the weekend. Monday comes soon enough.

When does Canada take Pierre and Miquelon back from the French?

Good thing it wasn’t in the hand of Vichy during WWII...
