Weekly Garden Thread - January 29-February 4, 2022 (Grow a Medicinal Garden Edition)
January 29, 2022 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I don’t have any lamb, but I’ll try that on some bear that’s going on the grill next week. Thanks!

Local weeds, jewel weed Impatiens, great for poison ivy exposure and mild rash. Although soap and water and cortisone are better.

Plantain, heal all Prunella, does it really?

Well over a foot, if the amount on my neighbor’s roof is any indication. And it’s still coming down.

A giant african snail, which can grow to be 30 cm in length. They feed on more than 500 types of plants, including peanuts, beans, peas, cucumbers, and melons.

Went downstairs to find an old book that my Dad gave me. It was precious to him but seeing as our 10 acres had many of these herbs and the book was doing him no good in Chicago, he gave it to me. Old yellow clipping from the East Side newspaper inside too. The book is available as a reprint on Amazon. This is a first edition. A narrow book, about 3" wide and almost 6 1/2 inches tall. 400 pages, many color plates. The article is nice so I shot that too. 0-02-01-c3b4d7ecf7b2f802a6fd66839653fd90fd31cf71b273a32d15cf9c003e020bc1-87cfcc8dbe0deb1 0-02-01-0de103945f4c6e7ea00ef4e6de9e7a780b1a022c5f796f3da3025166284b8e1a-508e01a49337270f 0-02-01-c564d05ecbbc9288e9e5fa45407e1f59c23d3e8401c33609c739d4da9469bfd5-2ac5096a2f7d6d67 0-02-01-516cbbf1673b294a7c8e014432ba3da129613d3bca1b816a4001ce2e2ccde0f8-58c624670fbbb0b8 0-02-01-9b3fcca241617f329edc2b1aaeb40872ec25eb9c9ac5e526849bc6151f17a722-eebccb6ed386c488

Nor’easter time here in southern New Hampshire.

A couple of weeks ago we had a heavy wet snow/rain that folded our hoop house. I have it sort-of pushed back up and supported, but will have to build a sturdy interior frame for it this spring.

Live and learn.

Household Six is ordering four chicks for our pen. That time of the year.

I have to finish up the plumbing project iin the basement. I am going to put in a sill cock at the southwest corner of the house, and while I am doing that, I will tee-off that line to run cold water to the main planting table and the counter.

A few hours ago i shoveled a path to the street. It was over a foot then. I just looked out and it’s all covered up with what looks like another foot.

I am discouraged. So is my pitbull, who has to go to the bathroom but will NOT leave the couch. Not even for a treat.

Ugh!- not good. The only bright light is that the east coast, being used to larger storms, does a pretty good job cleaning the streets fairly quickly, but still, it takes awhile.

I had to,move one year during a storm that dropped 33 inches, it,was brutal. Had to shovel out both places in order to move- Spring was a long time arriving.

Tomorrow is “Moving Day” for my nephew and his bride.

I already helped move a lot of stuff last weekend, but Tomorrow was supposed to be “The Big Day”. Ugh.

We are super fortunate that we do not have to move into our new home, nor sell our soon to be former home, until nice weather returns.

That is one thing that I’ve been grateful for - because cruddy weather bringing cruddy moving conditions aside, houses tend to fetch better prices in the spring. Pulling up to an otherwise decent home - which has mounds of dirty snow/ice from plows in front, bare trees, no pretty grass or flowers, and imagining yourself having to lug your furniture through sloppy conditions... we will hold off on listing. We have installed all kinds of sensors at the new house, so we can monitor things there remotely, and drive down between snowstorms for quick visits.

For now, I’m just trying to work out the plant planning, and some beds and some trees. It’s a 3/4 acre lot, and other than a few cedars too close to the “new” house - there is little else going on there.

They should have mounted a webcam on my house. Then they would get some snow footage!

So, I should start dosing Beau with Catnip Tea? I’m on it!

Great find. Thanks for sharing all of that!

Re: African Snail. Probably NOT something you want in your garden, but he’s kinda CUTE in a rabbit-like way! :)
