Why Carnival and All the Other Cruise-Line Stocks Just Crashed
The Motley Fool ^ | 1/27/2022 | Rich Smith

Posted on 01/27/2022 1:31:31 PM PST by Capt. Tom

Since the beginning of our fiscal year, [and Carnival's presumably speaking of fiscal 2022 here, so pay attention if you want to know how this current year is going], we have experienced an impact on bookings for our near-term sailings, including higher cancellations resulting from an increase in pre-travel positive test results and challenges in the availability of timely pre-travel tests. In addition, in the last few weeks we have seen a dampening of the booking activity for the second half of 2022 relative to 2019.

In other words, customers are canceling trips in the first half of the year, and also "dampening" reservations for the second half.

First and second half? That sounds like Carnival is predicting a weak year all through 2022, which is obviously not what investors were hoping to hear today. While management tried to put a brave face on things, reassuring investors that "we expect to be able to successfully operate over 96% of our previously disclosed available lower berth days ... in the first quarter of 2022," being "able" to sell those reservations doesn't necessarily mean Carnival will be able to find customers to buy them.

As of this writing, neither Royal Caribbean nor Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have published warnings similar to the one Carnival Corporation just put out. That being said, it stands to reason that if vacationers are leery of cruising with Carnival, "put in place comprehensive health and safety protocols for protection against and mitigation of COVID-19 then they're probably going to be nervous about cruising with Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, as well.

If that's the case, then analyst predictions that Carnival will return to profitability in Q3 2022 and Royal Caribbean and Norwegian will turn profitable again in Q2 just got thrown into question. No wonder investors are upset.

It is very selfish for people to refuse to go on cruises—all citizens should practice for the future concentration camps!

Back in 2020, I had planned on going on a cruise this year, then COVID came and killed the cruises. Now they are killing it themselves.

I refuse to get jabbed to go on a cruise. My wife isn’t that keen on them anyways, so looks like it will never happen.

You can take container ship cruises. Have you ever thought of that?

I like cruises and my last cruise was a sixteen day full transit of the Panama Canal from Ft. Lauderdale to San Francisco. It was a fabulous and relaxing vacation.

Like you I avoid crowds. Like I prefer the early reserved table dinner and my habit is to show up about three minutes late to avoid the lines. I’ve never understood why people line up early for these dinners when they get the same table and get served at the same time as everyone else.

On formal nights I tend to prefer to go to the buffet because you get the place all to yourself and they’ll often serve the same things at the buffet as the formal dinner to economize.

I avoid the excursions too. Too many fat butt women waddling on and off the buses, idiots coughing and making everyone else sick, irritating conversations, and etc.

Probably on purpose, so Brandon can use these cruise ships, to transport more illegals, saving them from having to travel through Mexico, in caravans.

He’ll just board them in Central America....Africa.....ME....help them out even more.

/sarc (?)

Container ship cruises? I’m skeptical. With 140 container ships waiting to offload in LA, I’m concerned that once you get on a container ship, you may be there awhile…,

Pacific container ship cruises are always too long, Atlantic trips are not. Check this out: Container ship cruise

These seem inviting to me.

I’ve been on several cruises on Navy Destroyers. Yeah, they were pretty clean all right.

if you are older than 20, I would suggest you never go on a Carnival Cruise....try a more adult one like Princess, and then Celebrity.

To be honest I’m not really all that keen on going any of those big ship cruises. I would love to take a sailing ship trip one day though.
