Are the converters being scrapped or resold? What is their value. Asking for a friend.

They steal them for the platinum in them I believe, but they might resell. Them too were they are so expensive these days.

I just looked up the parts house cost for a catalytic converter for my 2012 VW Jetta Sportwagen and it's $945.95.

There are some cheaper ones in the $350 range but they are "some fabrication required".

Then there's the installation costs.

They are scrapping them for the precious metals like platinum and palladium that the converters contain.

Supposedly the precious metals are not that easy to extract. It requires a person with know how to actual perform that function. Most thieves are looking for a person to sell it to since they do not know how to retrieve the precious metals.
