Christina Eyth thought she would find her neighbour's dog on the loose, but instead, she found a mystery creature she could not identify, lurking on the left-hand side of her front door.
An unidentified animal rescued by a woman who found it “scared and shivering” near her home has baffled wildlife experts, who can’t decide what it is.
Christina Eyth headed out to investigate around her house after discovering paw prints outside of her door earlier this week.
The woman from Pennsylvania in the US, thought she would find her neighbour's dog on the loose, but instead, she found a mystery creature she could not identify, lurking on the left-hand side of her front door.
“It was so scared and cold and shivering," she said.
“All I could think about was ‘this animal needed help’.
According to WJAC TV reports, Ms Eyth says she gently led the animal into her basement and phoned TJ’s Rescue Hideaway, who helped transport the animal to Wildlife Works.
Morgan Barron, who works for the conservation company, said she couldn’t “definitively say what it is” - despite her training.
"To err on the side of caution… and since it might be a coyote, we can keep it here, get genetic testing done and go from there,” she said.
“Behaviour-wise, he's very timid, very scared and not aggressive at all which makes me lean toward dog," she added.
Wildlife officials have confirmed the animal is being treated for mange and is being kept in isolation.
They are expecting the results from genetic testing to arrive in between two to four weeks.
Closer to home, a mystery animal corpse that washed up on a Devon beach back in 2019 left locals perplexed.

STUPID picture.
Based on the appearance of mange and evidence of attempt at changing its spots, I’m guessing it’s a Democrat.
It’s a baby chupacabra, probably just a year old.
They better put it into a stronger cage before it molts.
We see a lot of mangy malnourished dogs that look like that abandoned here in the Philippines. But because of the risk of rabies there isn't much you can do for them.
Yup, looks like a coyote hybrid. Genetic testing won’t mean all that much and the animal will be euthanized.
Most of what people call Eastern Coyotes are hybrids of coyote, wolf, and domestic dogs. And they can range in collars from what is pictured here to the very dark wolf colors. I had two in the backyard the other night. First one that came up to the feeder scared the heck out of me, I thought it was an actual wolf. The second one was smaller and much more coyote looking. Got a picture of the second one, but was too startled to get the first. Both reported to authorities as they were not fearful.

Coyotes on the western side of the Mississippi are more pure and smaller.
Coy-dog or Coy-wolf, but you are most likely correct.
We have them hear too. Snapped a pic of one last week and posted it on my photography state FBpage. People responded were shocked at the size.
I have been here 20 years and these hybrids are moving in the direction of larger and less fearful. Local authorities are trying to downplay such a large predator in our city-park system, but people are uncomfortable.
We’re moving into breeding season for them, so they will be on the move. Plus weather has been harsh the last several weeks so they are scavenging too.
Peruvian or Mexican (Xoloitzcuintli) hairless dog hybrid.
Yep mangy coyote should have been shot the second she found it.
A dog with a bad case of mange can look like just about anything.
Same goes for a coyote.
A young sick coyote is likely to be as docile as a dog.
The photo at the link — looks like a coyote.
We’re having a cold winter in PA.
At least it didn’t fall off a truck...
It’s The Famous, Legendary, Not-So-Elusive, Boca Raton Cougar! :-)
Coyote or more likely an abandoned dog with mange.
So far I have killed the ambitious strain of coyote around here. I stay alert as possible though. We are not that remote on the south but the north is miles of empty and they come from there.
My very smart cats tuck in when the lights in the house go out or before and some stay until I wake them for breakfast. I have never known cats to go to bed at night like these do. They know the risks, I’m pretty sure. I hope they do.
Our resident population of geese on the pond out back are good alarms as well and I encourage their presence.
My wife is generous with the two that live in the house but that is the limit. The others are visitors.
Loch Ness Monster
“It could be a bat-dog hybrid.”
Great, it can give you Covid and rabies.
I thought of it being a cougar, but not sure folks would have gotten it. Your addition of Boca Raton was a good one! (I wonder - does wearing a leopard print skirt signal that they are “on the prowl”?)
But how does it taste ?
That’s southern cryptozoology.
yes...although it’s usually a leopard-print low-cut polyester bloyse!
Ya better stay away from him, he'll rip your lungs out, Jim.

Great. Now I got that song stuck in my head.
