The excitement continues to build for the April 16 start of the new United States Football League.

On Tuesday, we found out where the new league will play its inaugural season, as it was announced that Birmingham, Alabama, will be the home of all USFL games in 2022.

Games will be held at Protective Stadium, the 45,000-seat home of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, with a number of additional games also staged at historic Legion Field.

The first game will feature the New Jersey Generals against the Birmingham Stallions and will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 16. That game will air on both FOX and NBC, making it the first scheduled sporting event to air on competing broadcast networks since Super Bowl I in 1967, which was shown on both CBS and NBC.

"The first game played in any new league is itself historical, and having the USFL’s inaugural game simulcast by NBC and FOX makes it even more so," said FOX Sports CEO and Executive Producer Eric Shanks. "It’s rare when two competitors can come together and see how cooperation can lead to long-term benefit."

I’ll watch, assuming no kneelers or any of that ilk.

I am disappointed that nfl kneelers are back in business. I guess disrespecting this country continues to pay well.

The original league was great. Don’t have high hopes for this, but will watch.

They have eliminated 6 original teams. Washington and Chicago, plus the whole original west division. LA, Oakland, Denver, and AZ. It’s an east and south league.

No Oakland Invaders? The Raiders had just moved to LA when USFL v1.0 took off - the Invaders helped take some of the sting out of that desertion back then, would have been nice to have the Invaders around to make up for the sheer lunacy of moving the Raiders to Las Vegas.

Since all the games are being played in Alabama...what difference at this point does it make?

No explanation as to why all the games will be played in Birmingham in the article. Is it because of Covid, or due to finances? Seems kind of ridiculous to house all the teams in Birmingham but they represent other cities. Will teams be flying into Birmingham each week, or be based completely in Birmingham? Glad to see the Michigan Panthers restored from their USFL glory days! Inaugural champions in 1983!

Enjoy the year. They will be out of business again in 2023.
