WASHINGTON, Friday, Jan. 24.

measures of the Committee of Ways and Means, which are, in fact, very nearly the same proposed in his annual report. It is to be regretted that the Bank Committees visited Washington with their advice, and that Mr. CHASE varied his original plans to meet their views. The delay in legislation is owing to this cause alone.

Mr. ALLEY's speech in the House yesterday is the most valuable yet made on the currency question, and expresses the principles that will prevail in Congress.

NO FOREIGN DISPATCHES.

Our Government was not in receipt of its foreign dispatches by the last steamer at a late hour to-day. They are expected to-night, but cannot be of importance, as time was not allowed after the news of the. surrender of SLIDELL and MASON reached England.

SECRETARY STANTON AND THE ARMY.

It is reported of Secretary STANTON that he says:

The army must now earn its living." The soldiers in the dismal, inactive camps reply that all they desire is something to do. With such accord the country will know what to expect.

CONFIRMED.

The Senate, in Executive Session to-day, confirmed the nomination of P. H. WATSON, Assistant-Secretary of War. Mr. TUCKER's nomination will be acted on next Monday.

JOHN TUCKER, Assistant Secretary of War, arrived in town to-day, but will return to Philadelphia, and not assume his official duties will next Wednesday.

BRIG.-GEN. SICKLES CONFIRMED.

The Military Committee of the Senate unanimously resolved to-day to report in favor of the confirmation of DAN. SICKLES as Brigadier-General. It is understood that Secretary STANTON commended this decision. Gen- SICKLES is in Washington.
