A 73-year-old knew she was being scammed. So she lured the scammer to her home and had him arrested, police say.

Jean, a 73-year-old grandmother, was at her Long Island home Thursday morning when she received a phone call from a man claiming to be her grandson. He was in jail for drunken driving, he said. He needed her help posting an $8,000 bail.

But there was one problem, Jean thought — her grandsons are far too young to drive. It was a scam. So Jean decided to swindle the swindler.

“I knew he was a real scammer. I just knew he wasn’t going to scam me,” Jean told WCBS, which identified her only by her first name.

Jean played along, eventually inviting an apparent bail bondsman to pick up the cash from her house. But it was a setup, and moments after Jean handed over an envelope stuffed with paper towels, police tackled the man to the ground.

Joshua Estrella Gomez, 28, was arrested and charged with attempted grand larceny in the third degree, according to the Nassau County Police Department. Gomez could not be reached for comment, and it is unclear whether he has an attorney.

My Mother had a similar phone call. She wasn’t that aware and when the caller identified himself as her “grandson” my Mom blurted out “oh James, is that you?” Falling right into the trap of divulging a family members name, leading to the perpetuation of the scam.

Long story short, I went to my children’s school and demanded that they all leave class and show their physical presence in the office of the school so I could assure my Mother that it was a scam.

My mom and dad almost fell for this 15 years ago. The guy at the local food lion stopped them from sending the money. They then called my brother whom said grandson said not to call and found out he was with my nephew. They almost wired 15k to new york to get him out of jail.

Those jackles prey on the elderly ever day.

It must be hard to live in fear. She’s a lot tougher than you are.

Remind how brave she is when he returns to kill her.
It’s not about bravery. She would have been just as brave in a Wal-mart parking lot.

She should have pulled a “Chris Hansen” and had him “take a seat”.

Stupid to invite him to her home. He’s going to get out. In New York, even murder won’t get you jail time.

He already knows her name. These days it is not hard to come up with a physical address. He'd know who set him up to be arrested and he could probably find her unless she went into deep hiding. Hopefully for her, he'll just consider it a tough break for him and let it go.

I believe it was two guys posing as cops trying to catch some counterfeiters passing bad $100 bills.

So they would target old folks, telling them to withdraw
their savings in $100 bills, hand it over to them so they ‘’match’’ it against the phonies. They then would give the ‘’mark’’ a receipt for the money to be reclaimed which of course it never was.
