In October 2021, Edith’s, a Brooklyn eatery specializing in foods of the Jewish diaspora, announced on Instagram that they were planning to hand out cans of Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray—the chartreuse celery-flavored soda that’s a staple in Jewish delis—to trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Elyssa Heller, founder and CEO of the restaurant, explained that she wanted to introduce more folks in the neighborhood to the drink. But there was a problem: As they prepared to place a large order of the soda from their distributor, Heller’s team discovered there was no Cel-Ray to be found.
Missing celery soda might not seem like a big problem in the midst of a pandemic; if you didn’t grow up frequenting such delis, especially those in the Northeast, you may have never seen Cel-Ray at all. Or perhaps you’ve reached for Dr. Brown’s black cherry or cream sodas instead, because, well, a vegetable-flavored beverage might not necessarily be anyone’s first pick. But I can say with certainty that no Jewish deli experience is complete without a can of Cel-Ray. Cloying and vegetal all at once, it cuts through bites of fatty pastrami and corned beef with every sip. When it comes to Cel-Ray, if you know, you know.

>>well you have burgoo.
First heard of burgoo reading Tristan Jones epic sea adventures. Apparently it was a staple of seamen for a couple of centuries back in the age of sail, a thin cut above hard tack that had to be an acquired taste being a pudding of oatmeal and mashed up whatever fish was at hand.
Never seen it, much less tried it.
But in my old age, my tastes have changed enough that I’d be willing to try it, although I’d have said “Yuck” for the previous 70 years.
My local Safeway has wonderful organic veggies, very well priced. And so do other local stores. Safeway used to be horrible, but now it’s the best store in town re organics. New produce manager at our local is good too, young guy raised on a farm.
All Safeways and Albertsons in the US are owned by one guy in NYC, a friend of Trump’s. Apparently he hired all the right product managers within the last couple of years, and they’re keeping us healthy. Lots of customers talk about it in check-out lines.
AMZ has plenty of Cel-Ray by the case.
its a wild game stew
My big, doofie dog likes all vegetables (even onions) except for celery. Personally, I like celery but don’t know if I’d go for Cel-Ray. Sounds weird.

Mine did too but he loved meat, eggs and fish.
that dog stunk on both ends...
No, I put celery on my peanut butter. Sheesh!
fair enough!
I’ve had celery juice from our farmers market, but never this soda.
Amazon seems to have it.
Amazon is effed up like a soup sandwich since covid
Try to find Diet Caffee free Pepsi
My last order from amazon was all effed up.
why? :)
Celery is the #1 vegetable contributing to kidney stones. Spinach is close...
never understood why people discard the leaves.
Put it in the soup! in the salad!!
Onions are toxic to dogs.
“These vegetables can cause red blood cell destruction (specifically, Heinz body formation) and result in anemia. Ingestions of onions or garlic of more than 0.5% of dog’s body weight are potentially toxic. For example, this would equate to a 30 lb dog ingesting about 2.5 ounces of onion or garlic.”
