BY ALEX LAUER @ALEXLAUER After a winter storm left hundreds of motorists stranded on Interstate 95 in Virginia earlier this month, many for over 24 hours, we were left with plenty of questions. What went wrong on a governmental level that led to this? How could similar traffic shutdowns be avoided in the future? What should we be carrying in our cars in case of an emergency like this?
The most perplexing question of the bunch was a hypothetical one: what would have happened if all of these cars — stuck on icy roads in the snow in temperatures that dropped down to the teens — were electric? Well, it was posed as a hypothetical question, but most of the people who asked it perceived it as a rhetorical one; the implication was that if I-95 was full of EVs, the outcome would have been a catastrophe of dead batteries, stalled vehicles and frozen occupants.
It’s easy to make an argument against electric cars in extreme cases like these, partially because the technology is so new and thus easily misunderstood, and partially because, as we have previously discussed, EVs do indeed fare worse in freezing temperatures than in warmer weather (as do internal combustion engine cars). But to see whether there was an argument to be made in defense of our supposed electrified future, I did something a little more difficult: I idled in an electric car for 12 hours to see what would happen.

No different then only having half a tank of gas. You’ll run out in both scenarios most likely.
Very impressive...I would not have thought it would do so well...
Musk is a piss poor manager. In the early days he actually had a cot and slept on the production floor so he could be there to sort out production issues. Taking personal charge and responsibility. NO! Leadership is knowing how to delegate to idiots who will then eff it all up for you.
Big difference, you can refill a gas tank and even carry extra gas, you can’t recharge your car.
<>Nearly all of not all EV companies are moving to solid state batteries by 2023-2025 that do not use lithium and are 100% recyclable and fast charging<>
Free beer tomorrow.
“What if your car was at half power or less when you got stuck?”
then you use just the seat warmers, and go easier on the cabin heater.
If the ev had an extended range battery the equiv for an ICE car would be an extra 10 gal gas can in the trunk.
“What went wrong on a governmental level that led to this?”
The deep state hires low-IQ nincompoops to fill federal bureaucrat slots. That was proven when thousands of bureaucrats jumped in their cars to drive into a blizzard without water, food, blankets and emergency supplies, even though the morons had advance warning of the imminent blizzard.
The bureaucrats were so stupid that they ordered pizza delivery while they shivered in their cars. I’m expecting lawsuits from the idiot bureaucrats against Pizza Hut because the pizzas were not delivered.
“Nearly all of not all EV companies are moving to solid state batteries by 2023-2025 that do not use lithium and are 100% recyclable and fast charging”
My understanding was that the solid state batteries still use lithium as the electrolyte. What would they use as a readily available alternative?
there is a huge push to barcode all batteries and battery containers so that they can be robotically identified and properly recycled.
Ppl that want to get an EV are free to spend their money on one. Those of us who don’t shouldn’t be forced to do so. It’s just like the vaccine mandate. I’m so sick of the govt telling us what we can and can’t do, especially since they have such a terrible track record.
Average Tesla owner makes $140k a year.
—”You can refill a gas tank.”
That could become difficult as the gasoline sellers close up.
If you got some bucks:

<>Ya put 80 million EV’s on the roads and you can bet the rent, electricity rates will skyrocket, there will be electricity rationing and regulations on when or where you can charge, drive, etc, etc.<>
And flyover country, the Deplorables, will get the short end of rationing.
Forcing EVs (along with open borders, Covid restrictions, CRT, vote fraud, inflation, etc.) on an unwilling nation is simply part of the rat plan to destroy the middleclass.
Nice try. You still could not give me one. Not a chance.
—” Their thermal efficiency goes UP with the colder environmental temperature. “
Yes, a nice Delta-T and all that...
On an ICE most of the energy is lost to the atmosphere.
But... The hot-vapor engine did all this running unheard of high temperatures at an extremely lean air/fuel ratio, in seeming violation of accepted internal-combustion-engine physics.
Smokey Y. was a true gearhead guru.
Some of his exploits will be remembered for many generations.
I get less mpgs in the winter than in summer.
So do I, but warming your car up while scraping ice and (possibly) under inflated tires due to prevailing temperatures explain a lot of it. Winter blend gas?
I've noticed that too. I attribute it to two, maybe three or four things.
First and foremost there are winter additives put in the fuel. These slightly reduce the chemical energy per gallon.
Second, in winter time I tend to run the car sitting still to warm it up, often while I'm out scraping snow/ice off the windows. That's fuel burned for no miles driven.
Third, (kind of iffy) in winter I run the heat. That means the fan is drawing power. Summers are typically mild enough I don't run AC much. I don't even roll the windows down all the way, I've found a way to roll two windows down just an inch or two that provides a nice breeze.
Four, (also kind of iffy) in winter days are shorter, so I'm more likely to be driving with headlights on. They are a decent draw of electrical current. All that energy comes out of the gas tank.
take some extra or emergency crews bring extra cans.
Point is refueling is a trivial matter with gas.
We don’t have the electrical infrastructure for batteries anyway, not even close. Talk about it again in 20 years.
