I Idled in an Electric Car for 12 Hours in the Freezing Cold to See What Would Happen
Inside Hook ^ | 20 Jan 2022 | ALEX LAUER

BY ALEX LAUER @ALEXLAUER After a winter storm left hundreds of motorists stranded on Interstate 95 in Virginia earlier this month, many for over 24 hours, we were left with plenty of questions. What went wrong on a governmental level that led to this? How could similar traffic shutdowns be avoided in the future? What should we be carrying in our cars in case of an emergency like this?

The most perplexing question of the bunch was a hypothetical one: what would have happened if all of these cars — stuck on icy roads in the snow in temperatures that dropped down to the teens — were electric? Well, it was posed as a hypothetical question, but most of the people who asked it perceived it as a rhetorical one; the implication was that if I-95 was full of EVs, the outcome would have been a catastrophe of dead batteries, stalled vehicles and frozen occupants.

It’s easy to make an argument against electric cars in extreme cases like these, partially because the technology is so new and thus easily misunderstood, and partially because, as we have previously discussed, EVs do indeed fare worse in freezing temperatures than in warmer weather (as do internal combustion engine cars). But to see whether there was an argument to be made in defense of our supposed electrified future, I did something a little more difficult: I idled in an electric car for 12 hours to see what would happen.

Where is all the power coming from to charge millions of these energy sucking electric appliances?

What numb-nuts doesn’t take into account is where the power comes from.

that doesn’t answer my question...

some of us live in hurricane prone areas and have experienced power outages for weeks after one strikes...

No longer any civil discussion or room for opposing views without name calling. Nice

1. Our farm is right atop one of the largest natural gas reserves in the world (and we get royalties) and I live within 40 miles of two of the largest coal powered plants in the US and nearly every relative was employed in coal production at one time or another. I think I know where the power comes from.

2. The fact is if every power plant was turned to coal powered in the US and all the cars were electric, the pollution emitted is less than if all the cars were gas and the power plants green. Those are facts look it up.

How do you idle an electric car?

I was wondering that myself. I searched through the posts that followed and did not see an answer. Let me know if you get an answer.

Better than I would’ve thought I have to admit.

I thought the internal combustion vs. steam vs. electric question was settled at the inception of the horseless carriage.

They do not idle. Only the heater or ac is working if parked (if you have that on).

EV’s are just a large Lionel Train with a battery. Press the pedal and it goes.

“He talked about this car for three months,” Røsnes recalls. “I said, ‘Are you crazy? This car doesn’t have an engine! It’s just a play car’.”

Another advantage that the Roadster and Model S have in Norway, however, is their performance in cold weather driving conditions.

“We found out that it’s a super winter car,” says Jens. “It’s so fantastic. It’s much easier and better than an ordinary car.” He likes that you can heat the Model S remotely via an app, so that there’s no ice or snow on the car when you’re ready to drive it. He also says the winter range is almost the same as the summer range. In December, he and Røsnes took the Model S to an ice hotel in Sweden, 200km from Narvik. The temperature dropped to -40 degrees Celsius. It was so cold that the trains couldn’t operate and the diesel in the buses froze. But the Model S was just fine.

Sorry but temperatures in the teens and low 20s are relatively balmy in Minnesota especially this winter. Morning temperatures have been in the teens below zero. How would this EV fare when the temperature is below zero? Could you keep the windows clear when creaping along in below zero weather and you needed your lights and wipers?

True for lead-acid, other battery chemistries not so much.

Thousands of Fords caught fire and you never knew!

An elderly Georgia woman dies in a car fire. Police claim Shelia Bryan, the woman’s daughter, is responsible. An expert fire witness shares an opinion on how the fire ignited that differs from the prosecution’s theory and, if verified, would clear Bryan of any culpability.
