Can a Vice President serve two terms as President under the Constitution?
The reason I'm asking is because Trump/DeSantis is an unbeatable team and, if DeSantis became VP for Trump's second term, could he then run for two terms as President or is limited to one term as President because he served one term as VP?
I do understand, in a broad manner, how your country works. However, detailed mechanics of your political system is not always apparent.
22nd Amendment “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice” etc. ELECTED. Doesn’t say he can’t BE President more, just that he can’t be elected more.
I doubt anyone could guess how the Supreme Court would interpret it.
"Ineligible" means "can't be elected." But could such a person be appointed to the position?
The other potential loophole would be for someone like Clinton or Obama to be appointed as Speaker of the House and then both the President and Vice President resign or die--the Speaker then becomes Acting President. I don't know if there is anything which would prevent Clinton or Obama (or GWB, who also served two full terms) from becoming Acting President under such a scenario.
Of course the ambitions of other politicians would work strongly to prevent something like that from happening.
Obama cannot serve any more terms as President or Vice-President unless the 22nd Amendment is repealed or modified by another Amendment.
