A Republican NeverTrump senator reveals more than he meant
American Thinker ^ | 20 Jan, 2022 | James Mullin

I recently wrote to my United States senator, a Republican NeverTrump, respectfully asking why the January 6 detainees are still in jail, with many still in solitary and not arraigned for what was essentially trespassing on public property (forgetting for the moment the role of FBI instigators). (Incidentally, we should all be writing.) His reply saddened me profoundly. I received back a two-page harangue of how horrible January 6 was and how it imperiled our democracy. Buried within that harangue were unexpected admissions about the unconstitutional conditions in which far more prisoners are held than most people realize. Surprisingly enough, these admissions gave me hope.

For anyone who lived through Election Night 2020, and watched Trump winning comfortably at 11:00 P.M. EST, only to lose that massive lead by the following morning, skepticism about the election will always remain intense. (And it seems more people are getting skeptical by the day.) That skepticism is hardened by stories of municipalities that actually stopped counting during the night and reopened with large Biden pluralities.

This sense of wrongdoing doesn't justify trespassing and certainly doesn't justify vandalism. But what happened on January 6 still pales in comparison to the carnage that BLM and Antifa wreaked on many American cities and towns the previous summer — and without cost to its perpetrators in most cases. So a white-hot rage remains in many Americans.

But back to my senator's curious reply. After a lengthy harangue about Jan. 6, the depraved perpetrators, and the evil Donald Trump, he provided two very odd statements. First, he informed me that 570 people are still held in D.C.'s jails.

Five hundred seventy! I had no idea that so many were incarcerated for so long, without trial.

There are a lot of “us” charged and a lot of “us” who have pleaded guilty.

I’ve wondered myself as to why they seem to have a large number of the wrong people in the D.C. jail, or other jails for that matter. Many of the people involved in last year’s riots & lootings were definitely criminals yet how many are brought to justice in any way, shape, or form. In fact some of them (possibly many) were bailed out by our so-called VP according to what I have heard. If there’s been no trial, how can they be held this long? They have not been found guilty of anything apparently. I guess their “prosecutors” realize that if they are released, then the “stuff” is going to hit the fan with all the stories that come out. Well, they need to be charged & tried or released according to the law as I understand it, so why aren’t they?

And yet, Ray Epps will only be asked softball questions tomorrow and will never face a day in jail, even though he is on large amounts of footage trying to incite people to violence!
It is my understanding that MANY of these people were nowhere near the capitol, were just seen on camera as having attended the rally and were wandering around, seeing the sights while in DC!

We really do need a write -in campaign to ALL Congressmen/women and Senators to explain why these people are being treated in such a way with no chance of making their case or explanation of why they were brought in and arrested. This is a treasonous act by our own government. These are not illegal aliens who have no rights...but would be treated so much better if they claimed to be such!

You're not current on what used to be our judicial system. It's standard practice for prosecution and defense to negotiate plea deals to avoid jury trials while presumption of innocence is a shared joke between lawyers. The accused are worn down with extended incarceration while their careers are lost and families suffer on the outside. It almost always comes down to accepting a deal's lesser sentence regardless of guilt or innocence. Judges aren't kind to people who reject the game and lose their case in trial - most judges being former lawyers themselves.

These protesters were ushered in by the Capitol Police, pursued and rounded up by the compromised FBI using technical means strictly allowed only for terrorists, disallowed access to video evidence for their cases, held in conditions substandard even for murderers while overseen by a cruel guard force mostly made up of Democrat-following immigrants, held on minor charges yet denied possibility of bail - so yes many of these political prisoners will plead guilty to make the horror stop...or at least get a date in the future when it will. Real criminals are treated far better and aren't denied their rights.

But Jan 6th was a coup attempt. Much more serious than the Spring and summer of 2020.

Holy crap. Someone THIS long-term as a Freeper, and yet you fall lock-stock-and barrel for the News Misleadia's propaganda.

Or maybe you've always been a bit of a troll. I've looked at your history and you are definitely not a Trump fan.

A lot of broken windows, pummeled doors, rushed barricades, tear gas sprayed and other defensive actions taken if they were being led in.

Let’s play the what if game. What if nothing about Jan 6th changed except those who breached the Capitol we’re doing it on behalf of Biden and were BLM & ANTIFA affiliated?

Additionally I am quite aware of the push to plea bargain I nstead of eating up court time. But the defendant has the right to accept or reject the “deal”, if they want a jury trial should they take it to trial and they can’t be imprisoned for more time than stated in the statute. If found guilty, they risk being punished at the high end of the punishment scale. If they have accepted something premised on a “lie” and standing before a court admitting to it they are fools and worse liars.

No "what if" when one of the TrumpWear disguised AntiFa guys bragged about their tactics to the accompanying film crew who paid him on top of whatever he got from the Soros people.

My point is that the politically incarcerated are NOT the typical revolving-door jailbirds used to the system. Most of those have half-way competent attorneys and bond out quick. These foolhardy tourists were allowed down a path of entrapment, purposeful patsies for someones plan for a massive riot that the patriots wouldn't conduct.

Who refused Trump's request for National Guard for that day but used them to make D.C. an armed camp for months afterward? Who do the Capitol Police ultimately answer to? Who's abusing their political muscle to make examples of these protesters in order to sow fear of utilizing our First Amendment, denying them their rights and civilized conditions (tortured till they crack)?

If they acted the same, too?

I would not encourage that they be tried for sedition or insurrection for (after having been let into the Capitol building by Capitol police) simply putting their feet up on furniture or moving a podium or taking a few selfies. I would not have held those guilty of this criminal trespass, without bail and for a year or more in a jail where they were certain to be mistreated.

Nobody committed arson, like they did in Portland. Nobody assaulted the police with fireworks and lasers, like they did in Portland. Nobody looted stores, like they did in Portland.

Yet you call this a coup, and say it is worse than Portland.

I'm, thus, wondering if you are a very long-term troll.

It’s only worse than Portland because of where it was and what it was attempting to do. Protest, scream, display signs and banners. But once you’ve broken in to interrupt something of national importance, you’ve crossed the line. If the meeting had been held in Portland, it would have still been worse than Portland. And on a scale of bad, Portland breaks the meter.

But once you’ve broken in to interrupt something of national importance, you’ve crossed the line.

If it was of such national importance, something that COULD NOT be delayed an hour or two, then:

  1. Why were Capitol Police told to hold back and not use their most powerful crowd-control measures?

  2. Why didn't law enforcement even TELL the protesters they weren't allowed in, and didn't respond to their interruption?

  3. ...and even worse, why did Capitol Police even ESCORT PROTESTERS INTO THE BUILDING and REMOVE BARRICADES? "...Videos from the day of the attack appear to show some officers escorting rioters inside the building. In one video, USCP officers can be seen opening barricades allowing the mob to enter the Capitol complex without resistance...."

Sorry, your claim of crossing a line sure doesn't hold up, when the line is clearly drawn in such a way as you can't cross it.

I still think you are a very-long-term troll.

Because they Capitol forces were overran. At some point it was to protect the chamber and not inciting something they couldn’t control without backup.

why didn’t the president call in national forces as soon as he was aware? Why did Pence have to make the call to get the national guard, possibly breaking the law?

Additionally, they did use a powerful control measure and now people are calling it murder. They tried to stop people both with barricades and when those were breached, at the doors and windows. And in certain circumstances once inside. Of course those “patriots” who made it inside then crapped and pissed in public places, rubbed it on the walls, broke into offices, stole property. Sorry, this sound like BLM and ANTIFA. But it was “patriots”.
