Veteran folk singer Hana Horká died Sunday of COVID-19 after intentionally exposing herself to the virus in an ill-advised self-immunization attempt. She was 57 years old.
The Czech musician’s passing was confirmed by her son Jan Rek, who told Prague Morning that she “preferred to catch the disease than get vaccinated.”

“I survived… It was intense,” Horká wrote in the post, according to local news outlets. “So now there will be the theater, sauna, a concert… and an urgent trip to the sea.” “Life is here for me and for you too,” she added. Two days later, the folk artist reportedly died due to coronavirus complications, with her son reporting that she “choked to death” within 10 minutes.

just curious, do you live in a large urban area surrounded by liberals? or in a more rural setting among primarily conservatives.
Because part of my suspicion is that this is affecting rural areas much more and thus the wide discrepancy in how people view this virus. Because honestly, it would be a lot easier to take it seriously for someone who had lost people close to them.
meant to say affecting large urban areas more
bkmk
Exactly. And anecdotes mean absolutely nothing. I almost said that in my post. Each side has its own anecdotes and unfortunately, each side has its own “facts.”
sorry to hear that, truly.
I guess I am just lucky, or in a relatively safe age bracket.
Yep. I live in a small town, 2500 souls more or less. Since all this began two years ago, we are on the scoreboard with 3 "COVID Deaths". Two old men who had already gone to the Big City to enter Hospice care before we had even heard of COVID-19, passed away (SURPRISE!) and were deemed to have had the virus. The third, another old man, suffered a heart attack, was evacuated and died of COVID.
No one in this town has been hospitalized or evacuated for treatment due to the virus.
All this about the Killer Plague is something happening somewhere else to people I don't know. Some people have had flu symptoms. Nothing major. But it looks like half the town is LARPing along with the media narrative.
Population density and the anonymity of big cities...
The Cheesecake Factory and Planet Fitness, now that’s something worth dying for. Martyrs without a cause.
“You know what is odd, I personally know zero people who have died of COVID. And I know a lot of people. I don’t personally know anyone who has been hospitalized either”
Many people don’t announce it.
I am up to 10 people I know who died of covid. 2 fraternity brothers (one made national news after he said covid was a hoax)
3 friends, several classmates, and 3 aquintances-friends of friends
Guessing you’ve missed the threads of FRiends who have posted of their loved ones’ deaths.
I’m not in a rural area. I live in southern NH near the MA border in a suburb. It’s a pretty good mix of liberals and conservatives.
I also take it seriously because my son is a doctor who has worked with COVID patients for the last 2 years. I get “boots on the ground” information from him. He worked in New York City in the ICU at the beginning of the pandemic and now he’s in Boston. He’s smart and knows how to look at data and at studies and he knows how to tell which ones are legitimate and which ones are not. I do try not to bug him with too many questions because he’s getting them from everyone. In the beginning of the pandemic I would send him studies I’d find online and ask him what he thought and he could tell me very quickly if they were done correctly and if they could be trusted. My son is a conservative/libertarian.
I have another son who is very much a libertarian and he has not gotten vaccinated. He is opposed to the vaccines. His views are similar to the ones many on FR hold. The two of them have civil discussions about everything COVID-related. I’m very proud of them. They’ve maintained a close relationship through all this. I wish the rest of the world could emulate my two kids who are on polar opposite sides on this issue. Both are very intelligent and they each respect each other’s views.
Why can’t we do that here? The rudeness and disrespect I’ve seen on Free Republic is extremely discouraging. I’ve been here for a long time and consider this my political home online. I don’t say much, but I’ve learned so much here. But, I feel like I don’t belong here anymore.
Excellent post.
The ChiCom germ warfare not only crippled the economy and killed a lot of people, it’s helped wreck FR.
What exactly is a cytokine storm? I keep hearing about them but nobody ever says what they are. No you say five people in your circle of friends and family. You personally know or personally know of? Because a friend of a friend is know of. You didn’t say how you know the Facebook guy but you didn’t say how you know him other than Facebook posts. Good friends of your wife’s brother is pretty far away from know. A friend of a friend even a good friend of a good friend is hearsay. That leaves you with maybe one? Because none of the ones you mentioned would be admissible in court.
I couldn’t agree more.
“I know MANY people who have died from COVID. I just don’t come on here and talk about it. I suspect I’m not alone here”
Yep, and many are pro vaccine but have to stay in the closet or get attacked unmercifully.
Perfectly safe. Thank god she didn’t get the vaccine, it would have killed her.
More likely she choked on a ham sandwich.🤔
I would love to know if I’m in the minority or the majority with my views here. I wish we could have a poll to get a sense of where we all are on the issues related to COVID. I just wonder how many people are being silent because they see how people with their views are being treated here.
And I’m not saying that people who think the way I do are never rude to the people who disagree with them. I’ve seen that as well.
A friend of mine caught it in December 2020, most his family got it too. He lasted a month, most of that in the ICU, it just kept getting worse. Finally shut down his kidneys at the end. Killed him and three elderly aunts. That’s the only one I’ve known personally but I know of others, friends of friends. I’d say six deaths offhand. I also know many who have caught it and who weren’t all that ill, me included. You just can’t predict how it will affect you.
